MPP receives reply Gilles Pouliot, MPP for the Lake Nipigon riding, has received a letter of ex- planation from the former federal Minister of Energy in reply to his letter about gasoline prices in northern Ontario. In the letter, which Poul- iot received on June 23, Pat Carney, the former Minist- er of Energy, Mines and Resources, said she has ad- vised the oil industry lead- ers in Canada that the government expects the benefits from sustained crude oil price reductions to be passed to consumers as soon as possible. "It is true that gasoline prices, on average, are higher in northern Ontario communities than in south- ern Ontario," Carney ad- mitted in the letter, a copy of which was obtained this week by the News. "As well, northern com- munities incur higher and substantially different transportation and distrib- ution costs, and retailing margins are generally high- er on account of lower vol- ume throughputs," Carney added. She also responded to the question of gasoline taxes, and noted that some citizens consider that fed- eral taxes on gasoline are excessive. 'In fact, federal con- sumption taxes currently amount to only 7.48 cents per litre of regular lead-ed gasoline or about 16 per cent of the average Can- adian pump price," Carney explained. 'Our government does not believe that the federal share of gasoline taxes is excessive," she noted.
