Thunder It was the same old story at the annual Schreiber In- termediate No-Body Con- tact Hockey Tournament, with a host team and a Thunder Bay team making it to the finals, only to have the host Sabres fall to defeat for the fourth year in a row. by Helene Ballard Time again for another try at writing. It sure looks like winter wants to hang around for a while yet. There's more snow, but I'd rather have that then what the poor folks in Northern California had ... floods and mud slides, what a mess. We had a very enjoyable day here to Birchwood Terrace on Valentine's Day. As well as being Sweetheart's Day, we also had one of our married couples celebrate their 56th wedding anniversary. We wish Cliff and Wallis Barker many more years together in health and happiness. We also had one of our residents celebrate her bir- thday: Philomenia Legard. So, for all these events, our very able cook made a beautiful heart-shaped cake, complete with pink frosting. Yummy! On Thursday afternoon, February 20, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion were hostesses for our monthly birthday party. After our cake and coffee, we all en- joyed playing bingo. On behalf of the residents, I would like to thank these ladies for all their devotion and kindness: And now, if I may, in answer to phone calls and chance meetings in town, I will make one more appeal to our Reeve and Town Council, in regard to an item in the Times: News of Thunder Bay. = Notice The North Shore Disability Action Group has announced that Lake Nipigon MPP Gilles Pouliot will attend the group's February 27 meeting in Terrace Bay. Group spokesman Elizabeth McLean said that the organization is thinking of incorporation, and add- ed that Pouliot may be able to help them out in this regard. The meeting,« which is open to the public, will be held at the McCausland Hospital's lobby starting at 7:30 p.m. According to another news release, the Handi Action Group, a different organization, is conducting a survey to determine the need for a Handi-Transit System in Terrace Bay and Schreiber. The more people who are included in the survey, the more effective the survey will be, the release pointed out. For more in- formation, call Cheryl Hodgins at 825-9369. All correspondence will be held confidential. The tournament, which took place on the February 15 weekend, attracted a number of visiting teams, including three from Ter- race Bay. There were also teams from _ Dorion, Nipigon, White River, Red Rock, Geraldton, Manitouwadge, and Thunder Bay. The Canucks, the Oldtimers, and the Norstars represented Ter- race Bay while the host town of Schreiber sent in the Sabres and the Diesels. The Sabres advanced to the championship game with wins over the Canucks This concerns the by-law for operation of snowmachines. It seems that this affects only the residents of the new sub- division. Well, both the McCausland Hospital and Birchwood Terrace are not in the new subdivision, as well as a lot of other folks, but we still have to put up with the noise from these machines. Also, please note I don't mean the noise just in the evening up to 11 p.m. but through the night: 2, 3, 4 a.m., etc. They drive up to the southwest side of Bir- chwood so close to the building it's a wonder they do not go through the en- trance to the dry cleaners. I am sure they can find other places for this "*sport."" This is supposed to be a "'quiet zone" because of the hospital, so why is this not posted as such and the by-law enforced? I hope something will be done about this, and | am sure the Reeve and Coun- cil will agree and help those of us who lose a lot and the Oldtimers, while the Devils of Thunder Bay had to get past Manitouwadge, the Diesels, and then Nipigon to get to the finals. Manitouwadge destroyed Geraldton 14-1 in the consolation final, which took place just before the championship contest on February 16. In that final game, the Sabres and Devils enter- tained the crowd with end- to-end action in the first period but with no goals. Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, February 26, 1986, page 5 Bay hockey team wins Schreiber and they didn't miss out on that chance either, scoring once again to make it 2-0. The Sabres had a number of power plays themselves, including a two-man advantage at the end of the first period and again in the second period, but they just could not put the puck past Devils' goalie Earl Wicklund. Actually, Schreiber did score with 15 minutes left in the middle frame, but the goal was disallowed because a delayed penalty had been Schreiber finally got on the scoreboard with about 2:30 left in the period, on- ly to fall behind 4-1 before the buzzer sounded. The third period started well for the Sabres with a goal early on to make it 4-2, but after that the game got a little chippy with a series of game misconducts handed out to players on both teams. Under NBC rules, no body contact is allowed at any time. A number of quick goals by both teams resulted in a 5-3 lead for the Devils, but after that it was all Thunder Bay as the visiting team popped in two more before the end of the game to make the final score 7-3. Although Thunder Bay won the tournament, some of the Devils were "really disappointed" with the of- ficiating and warned they might not be back for next year's event for that reason alone. Other players, however, were more forgiving, and some people in the audience said they felt the tourney was a coin- plete success. Then, on Thunder Bay's first power play opportuni- ty, the puck was_ shot behind Sabres' netminder Joey Speziale to give Thunder Bay a 1-0 lead. Before the period ended, the Devils were presented with another power play, REST INSURED - AUTO - HOME - LIFE CALL NO CHARGE 1-800-465-3916 ' of sleep over this. noise. Thank you.
