Bits and Bil by Helene Ballard Hello everyone. I hope the old flu bug has not in- vaded your homes, but I guess that is just wishful thinking, so to those who have the flu, hurry and get well. Things are very quiet just now. I guess you could call it "After Holiday Lull." However, bowling has started up again, and our devoted bridge-playing friends were here on January 9, much to the delight of our own card New laws passed the Ministry of Transportation . The Schreiber Ontario Provincial Police detach- ment is just one of hun- dreds of law enforcement departments across Canada that are enforcing the amendments' to _ the Highway Traffic Act, which were passed recent- sharks, so I guess things are back to normal. Thank you. At this time, on behalf of all the residents, I would like to thank our friendly milkman, Bill Malcolm, for his contribution of delicious ice cream, which was enjoyed by all of us. This was so_ very thoughtful of you, Bill, thank you. This will be short this week. Sometimes this hap- pens. Maybe something exciting will happen before ly by the Ontario Legislature. The changes in the regulations will result in stiffer licence suspensions for drinking and driving of- fences and for driving with a suspended licence, a next week. Sorry to say, but I have a "bite", and it's not a new one. There are still lights out from the corner of Highway 17 and Lakeview and halfway down Elizabeth Avenue also. Come on, Hydro, think of the ladies who work late shifts. It's not very safe for them. This has been like this since Christmas, so how about it? Can we ex- pect new light bulbs to be installed now? Thanks, guys. Until next time news release from and Communications explained. The release, issued from the Public and Safety Infor- mation Branch of the Ministry, noted that the amendments _ increase Drivers beware Drivers who drink and drive will be under close scrutiny as members of the Schreiber Ontario Provin- cial Police detachment step up detection of suspected violators. According to an OPP news release, which was distributed late last month, a Stop Check Program is now under way. Under the program, of- ficers will be placed at strategic locations with alcohol screening devices, and when: a driver is suspected:of drinking, a de- mand will be made to test their level of impairment on the device, also known as an ALERT. During the past year, the Schreiber detachment in- vestigated 128 traffic ac- cidents. Three of these in- volved fatalities and im- pairment was a factor. A total of 33 people sustain- ed injuries in accidents where it was shown that alcohol was involved 33 per cent of the time. "When these figures are magnified to provincial levels, it is indeed a scary situation to have to drive,"' the news release added. Traffic enforcement has become a priority within the OPP, and removing drinking drivers is at the top of this priority list. The OPP ask for, the public's support in this matter. If you host a par- ty, please be certain that your guests have an alter- nate way home. Don't let them drink and drive.
