A great improvement has been noticed in regards to the young folks leaving their bikes on the sidewalks just laying every which way so please kids you can do this I know, just take the time to park those bikes out of the way. You know it's not only old folks who can fall over them, our wee toddlers can also fall and get hurt. Thanks kids, hope this will be the end to this bite. Forest industry threatened PORT ARTHUR -- On- tario's forest industry ac- counts for close to 15 per cent of the forestr produc- tion in Canada _ and represents a payroll of $1.7 billion to 69,000 workers according to I.D. Bird, president of the Ontario Forest Industries Association. Speaking to the Port Ar- thur Rotary Club, Mr. Bird said, "Eight per cent of Ontario's wood produc- tion, which accounts for 75 per cent. of' the economic activity here in the nor- thwest, is generated by the 23 member companies in the Ontario Forest In- dustries Association. "'Tt is threatened present- ly by the loss of the Euro- pean market because of the strength of the Canadian doliar overseas and the devaluation of Scandina- vian currencies, two fac- tors which combine to freeze us out of Europe. Similarly, the strength of the United States' dollar has attracted us to that market as never before. We have sold 60 per cent of our production there traditionally, and the ex- change rate has made our lumber so attractive that protectionist sentiments are _ suddenly causing serious concerns from coast °to coast. "Our sales of pulp to the United States market are depressed by 21 per cent in contract prices and 26 per cent in spot prices from last year's levels. As well, Brazil and Portugal are both providing low priced competitive pulp for that market. ~ "These are economic factors which underscore the vulnerability of our in- dustry and cause concern to producers and_ the thousands to businesses which provide goods and services to our workers and mills. "Other concerns are closer and more apparent. The budworm spread to 10 million hectares of forest land in 1984. It will go to 16 million in 1985, an area larger. than the combined area of three Maritime provinces." The speaker said the spray program of the past season covered only 2.5. per cent of the affected area, and would have to be substantially increased to ~ avoid further loss of timber, the possible loss of jobs and billions of dollars to the provincial economy. 52nd ANNUAL FIREMAN'S BALL October 25th, 1985 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Schreiber Recreation Complex Tickets $10.00 per person no persons under 19 years of -age admitted Music by: CITY LIMITS COSTUME PRIZES B00 Ce a Cpe & Application for inclusions, additions or Group Individual . . ° 1 " corrections to or deletions from the list Per Sk orc iol 3rd $100.00 3rd $75.00 may be made by an elector by com- pleting and filing a form obtainable at the office of the clerk.
