Page 2, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, March 20, 1985 By HELENE BALLARD A cheery good morning to you. I hope you are all getting in the mood for spring - sure feels like it and I know we are all anx- ious to shed winter coats and heavy boots. Sure will be nice. With the winter break things have been quiet here not much happening. Just waiting for the Easter Bun- ny. I guess there is still some kid left in this old shell because I love Easter eggs. Of course if they were not so fattening it would be better. We are looking forward to seeing our friends who left last fall for warmer climes. They will soon be coming back to enjoy our nice cool summer weather, it wil be nice to see them and chat over a cup of coffee. Just received word from out kitchen that one of our cooks Rosea Ojavee is back home from the hospital Rec Policy continued from page I of one of the suspended children took the podium and addressed Council with her concerns. 4 The Vice-President of Minor Hockey Mrs. Sandy Scollard took the podium on behalf of Minor Hockey and it's concern for kids. She pointed out the inflex- ibility of this policy, and that a punishment of this sort is much too severe. She 'also stated that the T.B.M.H.A. agrees that children who damage any property should be punish- ed but the punishment dic- tated by the Recreation Committee will do more harm than good. She also made reference.to the T.B.M.H.A. constitution that the "behaviour and conduct of all participants in the Association is the responsibility of every member of the T.B.M.H.A. and all in- fractions should be brought to the attention of the "Pro- test and Discipline Com- mittee" of the Associa- tion" shall be more con- cerned with the develop- ment of the individual per- son rather than just the development of hockey. players.' Mrs. Scollard went on to make recom- mendations as to the operating of the Recreation Committee and concluded by saying that "encourage- ment by the recreation committee, staff, user groups and parents to have pride in our arena as it once did will instill in the young! people that it is theirs for their use, and care of the building will be improved." At this time we would like to congratulate Mr. Ray Pichette our new Dodge dealer. His place of business on the Mill Road is a welcome sight. I understand he is busy selling cars - well that shows that our town of Terrace Bay is growing. There have been several new places of business open up here and that dear friends is Progress, now if we could get another 2000 people to come and make their home here; we would really be progressing. The next project here would be a few apartment buildings : so that if you were not employed by Kimberly Clark you could find a place to live. Who knows, maybe that will be next on the list. I guess things in town are OK because I just can't find a "Bite" seems everybody is happy with no There were then many comments from the floor, people wishing to add to what had been put before Council. The meeting brought out close to 65 per- sons, with all Council members? present. Reeve- Speer was in good control of the meeting and explain- ed a number of times. that Council was there only to listen, not to question or debate. A representative of the Schreiber Midget Team asked, that since the suspended Terrace Bay Midget had joined the Schreiber team, would they not please consider the youth allowed in to the Terrace Bay arena to play for the Schreiber team in the upcoming tournament. After the meeting the Council met privately to discuss the matter and moved in favour of letting the player participate in the tournament, a decision which pleases.Mr. Roberts, but unfortunately the player will be on an opposing team of the mates he played with since joining the T.B.M.H.A. in Atom division. Mrs. Rita McBride made a comment to Coun- cil that "If the user groups delegate the punishment for one of their participants who are guilty of miscon- duct, what of those who are not inyolved in any organized activity and are guilty of misconduct?" Shawna Patrickin spoke up to say that 'If the Com- mittee is acting for Coun- cil, why doesn't Council take over the policy all together?" There were many other concerned comments and recommen- "'beefs". Just would like to put in my two cents worth in regards to kids playing on the river ice - please kids, keep off, it's too dangerous, it only takes one false step and it's all over so stay away from the river, we want to see you grow up. Until next week remember keep a smile on your face and when you meet someone, a smile will greet you, it's catching. Try it. dations from the floor, al met with respect from Council. Councillor Bill Houston addressed the group, stating that it has not been a secret that he is in disagreement with the discipline policy, but he is not a bleeding heart. He went on to say that if one wants to run a clean public building, the first step is to close the doors. He said that "A public building is open to abuse, things are bound to happen. Van- dalism is way down and not because of rules that say "*You'll be thrown out." The policy needs a change. I have a strong feeling for you people, especially the kids. These recreational facilities are for you, and you should not be depriv- ed of the most importtant thing in life; being with. other kids. I know that misconduct needs discipline, I think the recreation committee does a good job, I only disagree on this one issue." These comments from councillor Houston prompted Mrs. ~ Scollard to point out, "*Let's give our kids some credit, basically they are very good kids who ap- preciate and respect the complex."' Councillor Ramsay spoke on his personal views of the policy and states that it has worked in the past, but he has trouble justifying the penalties distributed to 9 year olds. Mrs. Rita McBride ask- ed if the policy has been posted over the years to which Terry Bryson, Recreation Director, replied that the policy was published in the Terrace The regular monthly meeting of the C.W.L. was held on Sunday March 10th in the parish centre with Mrs. Billie Ann Saarinen presiding. _The secretary, Mrs. Ber- nadette Maranese, read the minutes and cor- respondence. After a number of other comments Reeve Speer ad- journed the meeting saying that the citizens can be assured that Council will review the discipline policy and the suspensions, and the necessary changes will be made. That seemed to satisfy the group, although they feel they have a long way to go. Mr. Doug Roberts told the NEWS after the meeting he is sorry it took the 9 years olds' suspen- | JOEY SAYS...
