It's also wise to ask the operator a few questions: * How much will the hut cost and for what length of time? * How many people will it hold comfortably? * Will live bait and other equipment be supplied? * Are there privies? * Is transportation supplied to the hut? Most ice fishing huts are equipped with propane, oil or wood-burning heaters. If you bring pre-cooked foods wrapped in aluminum foil, you can often reheat them on burners inside the hut. Always leave the hut clean for the next angler. Fishing tips Before you head out on- to the ice, here are some tips you should know about. Try using a "'tip-up", if you' re after perch or other small fish. This is simply a piece of wood balanced on a wooden base - something like an old- fashioned weight scale -- with a line wrapped around it. When there's a strike, one end of the device tips up. ; If you're after trout, you'll want to "jig" brightly coloured lures. Jigging is simply the action of pulling the fishing line up and down in the water -to draw attention to the lure. Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, February 13, 1985, page 9 A good credit rating A good credit record is an invaluable financial asset for the consumer who needs to borrow money. Without it, loans can be difficult or impossible .to obtain in an emergency. A credit record is a history of a consumer's payment habits. These records are kept by repor- ting agencies or credit bureaus throughout the province who _-- are registered under the Con- sumer Reporting Act of Ontario. Credit granting firms that are members of the bureau pay a fee each time they wish to obtain information. Most consumers who have taken out loans or us- ed credit cards in the past 10 years will have established records that may be consulted by lenders the next time credit is requested. Those who have never borrowed money or bought goods on credit may want to do so on a small scale to build a good record to fall back on emergencies. It is often easier to ob- tain a loan for the first time when the money is not desperately needed. Once consumers have shown an ability to handle payments responsibly, credit granters are usually more willing to extend credit. If you foresee a real need for credit and are sure you can afford it, talk to the manager or credit officer © where you do your banking about ways to go about building a good credit record. Requirements for ob- taining credit vary enor- mously depending on the applicant and the lender involved. You can pick up a short ice fishing rod used for jig- ging at most sporting goods stores. Or you can jig with tip-up line. If you're trying to catch larger fish - like trout or pike - remember to equip your pole or tip-up with heavier line. Don't hesitate to ask hut operators, bait and tackle outlet staff and other anglers for fishing tips -- the wheres, whens and hows to fish locally. They're often gold mines of information. First, check Ontario's Summary of Fishing Regulations. -- But, keeping that in mind, there are a few general guideliries 'that could help. Anyone not currently dealing with a deposit- taking institution such as a bank, trust company or credit union, should con- sider setting up a personal account in his or her own name. Manage it well for a reasonable length of time. Don't cause any overdrafts and, if it's a savings ac- count, deposit some money every month. Later, talk to the-loan of- ficer about borrowing a small amount of money for 1a few months. Don't forget to shop around at different companies for the best in- terest rates and terms. For your first foan, you | may be asked to have so- * meone with a good credit rating co-sign for the money. The co-signer would be held responsible if payments weren't made. In addition to credit records, many different factors are considered for loan applications. Lenders look at such details as an applicant's existing debts, assets, job stability and disposable income. If you do take out a loan, be sure to make all payments on timé. Paying it off before the due date ~ should improve - the bor- rower's credit record, although there may be a fee for early repayment. The good _ record established by handling that first loan well, could then be of help in obtaining ad- ditional credit such as a credit card. When using a card, be sure to keep track of all bills, check carefully and make payments on time. Interest charges on many credit invoices. Always take care not to become burdened with credit purchases. Remember, credit is just a fancy word for debt. Failure to pay can ruin your hard-earned credit record. Ontario residents have a legal right to check their own credit records by con- tacting the reporting agen- cy who supplied the information. The ministry has published two brochures on personal credit, including The Facts About Credit and You and The Con- sumer Reporting Act. To obtain copies, call the Con- sumer Information Centre , at (416) 963-1111 or toll free at 1-800-268-1142.
