Page 2, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, February 6, 1985 by HELENE BALLARD Hi. Sure wish Spring would hurry and get here, don't you? Well, I guess all we can do is wait and try to keep busy so time will pass. I hope all of you out ~ there who are "under the weather" with that nasty old flu bug will soon be _ better and feeling in the pink soon. I guess all the curlers are busy. Sure is a nice winter sport and I guess we have some pretty good players in Terrace Bay - keep it up. Our ladies in the quilting bee are hard at work, and take my word for it, when _it-is. finished, it will be beautiful. So don't forget to buy tickets for the raffle when it's time; I'll keep you informed. No doubt most of you have been to the opening of our new store, "The Strawberry Patch."" We wish to-welcome the owners of the store and wish them '*Good Luck."' As soon as the weather gets warmer, this ole gal and others from Birchwood will be out to pay a visit to the store and perhaps make a purchase or two. Sure signs of=progress in our " town in the past years, makes you glad you live here. I understand we will have a guest speaker in Terrace Bay for the Feb. 18 meeting of the Auxiliary to. the McCausland Hospital - Mr. Don Leslie who is with the Northern Superior Community Men- tal Health Program. This should prove to be a good topic for everyone to be in- formed about. So please members and friends, do plan to attend this meeting. Now for the "Bite". I know there are lots of pros and cons in regards to this subject, but it seems some folks think the recent punishment, administered by the Recreation Centre, was too harsh. I believe if the youth cannot behave, it should not go unnoticed, but a suspension of one year just may be too much. It's too bad that these damages sometimes cost you - the public - money. We all hope the rest of you will think twice before you destroy things. Thank you. Until next week. A sign in a small country store: *'In God we trust, all others pay cash." On Thurs- day 21 February, two of TVOntario's series, Realities and Challenge, will explore the issue of pushing children to learn. At 8:00 p.m. EST, Realities features an inter- view with child psychologist David Elkind. Professor of Child Study at Tufts University, Elkind is the author of the bestseller The Hurried Child. Says Elkind, "Mothers-to-be are deluged with literature assuring them that if they use the right materials they will be able to raise their babies' IQ and have them reading, swimming and do- ing gymnastics before they are three months old. There is, of course, no evidence to support the value of such early pushing. There is, however, considerable evidence that children are showing more and more serious stress symptoms than_ever before.*' Elkind and Realities host Naomi Loeb discuss the-~ effects this stress can have throughout -a child's life, and his conclusions after 25 years of work with young people. At 8:30 p.m., Challenge, TVOntario's® new series on social con- cerns, presents the drama **Pulling Flowers."' Pro- duced by TVOntario's award-winning Babs Church and directed by in- dependent filmmaker Clarke Mackey, '*Pulling Flowers" dramatizes the effects of a mother's pushing her young child to learn. The mother (played by Francoise Vallee) must learn ta. reconcile: her. fan- tasies of her child's achievement with the reali- ty of his own rate of learning.
