They are exchanging letters, drawings and photo- graphs with a Primary 4 class from St. Vincent School in Hull, Eng- land. Mr. Owens' brother Peter is teaching there on a teacher ex-. change. Under the supervision of teacher Tom Owens and teacher aide Suzanne Ray, the 7 year olds in the St. Martin's class made up a package bound for England which included a class photograph, some of 'their "'winter art" and individual stories about themselves. They have also been reading books about Great Britain in preparation for the ex- change. Some of the students shared their thoughts about the exchange. They want to know more about a game called 'Tig' and the '"*Queen's Castle." Christine Boutilier was concerned that they may speak another language but was relieved to find that they speak English and noted that "they draw and print nice', and their names were very different. She says there is a Jason in both classes and Nicole shares her name with Nichola in England. Her letter to England will tell about skating and the trip she will be taking in the summer to visit cou- sins in the Maritimes. Aaron Comeau was pleased that the English pupils play soccer like he does but noted that soccer is called "foot- ball" and television is "'telly." Differences like that are to be expected because "It's a different country', he says. He plans to tell the other, group about hockey and his favourite T.V. shows, "Manimal, A- Team and Webster."' Melissa Helmink felt sorry for the other pupils because they only have a little snow but was hap- 'Hands across the water " py to hear that the girls like skipping in the sum- mer, like she does. When she writes her next letter, she will tell them "when my birth- day is and about my friends Lindsay and Alison."' Joey Clarke wants to go to England next year but in the meantime will share his interest in "athletes and sports' and let them know that his dad is a mechanic. He summed up this un- ique learning experien- ce very well. The best thing is "We got to be, friends with them and they got to be friends with us."' Neldine will 1984. Mrs. 9:00 to 5:00.
