Recreation Northwest Conference Planned Thunder Bay will play host to a rather unique conference entitled "Recreation Northwest" which is scheduled to take place at the Valhalla Inn on October 20-23, 1983. This conference is uni- que not only because it will be the first con- ference of its type held in Northwestern Ontario but also because it will be dealing with sport, fitness and recreation and in- volving over 20 govern- ment and volunteer agen- cies throughout Ontario. The idea for such a conference originated from a discussion bet- ween Ed Morrissette, the Rec Director of Atikokan and the O.M.R.A. Board member, Ollie Chapman of Terrace Bay, back in November of 1978. Both individuals discussed the possibility of such a con- ference, that would be of interest to all recreation oriented groups in Nor- thwestern Ontario. Ed Morrissette suggested to Ollie Chapman, that she write to some key people indicating her interest in organizing such a con- ference, which Ollie did in January 1979. The response that she received was good but no definite date was set for everyone concerned to meet. About that time, the Ministrv of Culture and Recreation was undergoing some major changes within the system plus various other in- terferences - therefore not much got accomplished in regards to setting up a 'meeting to discuss Ollie's proposal. In January of 1982, Doug Clark, the Regional Manager of the Ministry of Culture and Recrea- tion in Thunder Bay, ask- ed Ollie about the possibility of setting up a meeting date in order to approach about 15 various organizations concerning a conference. These organizations got together in the spring of 1982 in order to establish a Steering Com- mittee. From there they met monthly and from the Steering Committee, other organizations were contacted and a Planning Committee was set up. The Planning Committee realized a goal of 12 to 16 months in order to plan for this major con- ference. When the idea and the concept was perceived, it was then presented to the Minister of Tourism and Recrea- tion, the Honourable Rueben Baetz and other ministry officials. Their response was_ very positive and the go-ahead was given for such a ma- jor under-taking. The Committee then went in- to action. Contacts were made monthly meetings were scheduled and the rest will become history. Ollie Chapman should be congratulated on her ability to organize such an event. When asked about the upcoming con- ference, Ollie modestly stated that "a great deal of thanks should go to the Regional Office of the Ministry of Tourism and Recreation in Thunder Bay. In addition to all their other responsibilities that these consultants have to contend with, they should be given credit for their con- tinuous time and effort which was spent on organizing this unique event. A conference of this magnitude takes at least a year of planning and needs the full co- operation of all those in- volved, in the planning for the entire affair." Herb Gray of the Regional Office in Thunder Bay said that "'as of August 9th we have 265 out of a possi- ble 320 participants, scheduled to attend. They will be coming from over 36 different communities throughout the Northwest." The conference . is designed fo those who can afford to come and also for those who cannot afford it, if it is too high. The conference is a real bargain with the registra- tion fee set at $50.00. The registration fee covers the cost of 3 nights ac- comodation at the Valhalla Inn, various socials, plus all but a cou- ple of meals. The Conference will be of interest to groups and individuals with a direct or indirect interest in recreation, such as town councils, professional recreationists, volunteers, educators, facility managers and sports and parks personnel. The goal of the Con- ference is to bring these groups together to discuss common goals and con- cerns, roles and relation- ships. The Theme for this conference is "Sharing Together We Grow"' and is appropriately named. Common goals of all concerned groups. are basically the same; that being the improvement of the quality of life. The concerns would be cen- tred around their objec- tives. The objectives would of course be dif- ferent for every group, but often the process to meet these objectives are the same (eg.) not enough money, 'can't -- get volunteers, can't find the resources, etc. The roles are important, because they have to know why they exist. It's important for each group or in- didivual working in sport, fitness or recrea- tion, to know what their specific role is, not so much as the role of others. If the relation- ships with others in the field are constant and sharing, we learn from others and grow not only as individuals or specific groups but as a constant force working separately and together improving the quality of life in Nor- thwestern Ontario. Recreation, sport and fitness activities have come a long way in the past few years, especially here in Northwestern On- tario. They are no longer looked upon as a service that we can do without. More and more leisure time is allocated to in- dividuals due to work sharing, unemployment, early retirement and shorter working hours. Because of this, more programmes which are self-satisfying and en- joyable, must be provided. As mentioned earlier, over 20 government and volunteer agencies are in- volved with this con- ference including groups such as the Sports Coun- O.M.R.A. Board member, Ollie Chapman of Terrace Bay, has played an important role in planning for this massive recreational confer- ence. cil, Thunder Bay Parks and Recreation, Ontario Arenas Association, and Boards of Education. Everyone is getting in- to the act today and the Ministry of Tourism and Recreation, who are the major sponsor for the Conference, is pleased at being assisted by some of the most knowledgable groups available to them. Anyone wishing to ob- tain more information on this up-coming event may do so by contacting Ollie Chapman in Terrace Bay or by getting in touch with Herb Gray from the Regional Ofice (toll free) 1-800-465-6939. And keep in mind the theme - "Sharing Together We Grow."'
