Re- serve 1 cup of the cus- tard mixture, set aside. Soften' gelatin in cold water, stir into remain- ing hot custard mixture, stir in rum. Place in bowl of ice and water or chill in refrigerator, stir- ing occasionally, until mixture mounds slightly when dropped from spoon. Combine choco- late and the reserved custard mixture. Pour into baked pie shell. Beat egg whites and cream. of tartar till foamy. Beat in % cup sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, continue beating till stiff and glossy. Do not underbeat. Fold re- maining custard mix- ture into meringue. Spread on chocolate mixture. Chill at least 3 hours or until set. If de- sired, garnish with whipped cream. Sprink- le with shaved choco- late.
