Page 8, Terrace Bay-Schreiber News, Wednesday, April 20, 1983 _ Society meets The annual North- western Ontario Pro- fessional Recreation So- ciety conference was held in Thunder Bay on April 10, 11, 12 and 13. Approximately 30 peo- ple attended, represent- ing various communities of Northwestern On- tario such as: Longlac, Geraldton, Terrace Bay, Schreiber, Red Rock, Thunder Bay, Dryden, Kenora, Manitou- wadge, Sioux Lookout, Ignace and Minaki. The aims and objectives of the society are: 1) to promote the develop- ment of positive leisure time pursuits in North- western Ontario; 2) To encourage the opportu- nities for the exchange of knowledge and ex- perience among the members; 3) to provide opportunities for mem- bers to gain new infor- mation through formal training seminars; 4) to remain continually aware of the need for change and growth and to be prepared to alter the function of this asso- ciation to meet new needs and challenges. The history of N.W.O.P.R.S. stems back to the early 50's when the Recreation Di- rectors would meet and discuss matters around regional sporting events and training pro- grams for playground leaders. In later years . projects expanded to in- clude professional de- velopment courses for members and direct lia- Relations - son with provincial and government agencies. The original name of the association was North- western Ontario Direct- ors of Recreation Asso- ciation. In 1976 the name of the organization was changed to North- western Ontario Profes- sional Recreation So- ciety to broaden its membership potential as well as to service the entire recreation pro- fession. Membership in the association is open to any person who is employed in the recrea- tion or education field. The Recreation Lead- ership class of Confed- eration College partici- pated in the conference and their assistance in arranging and partici- pating in the profession- al development section of the conference was greatly appreciated. Students are encourag- ed to become members of the association. Mem- bership in the N.W.O.P.R.S. can be obtained by writing to Ian Smith, Treasurer, Box 610, Longlac, On- tario, or by contacting any member of the exe- cutive.
