Aprilis Cancer Month The local Cancer So- ciety is hard at work on this year's campaign under the leadership of Chairman Mary Hale. Over fifty canvassers are knocking on doors in Terrace Bay this month asking for donations to help fight cancer. ' This year's cam- paign got under way with an organization meeting held at St. Martin's Church at the first of the month. Two films on organizing a campaign and how to canvass. were shown. According to Mrs. Hale the volunteer canvas- sers will be making their rounds throughout the month. "The people have always been very good in Terrace Bay. They know that April is Cancer Month and they actually look for us to come: around.' The can- vassers have the whole month, they go out on a good day."' "Our daffodil sale at Costa's was very suc- cessful. Mrs. Marg Chalmers, Helen Brooks, Lil Harris and Joan Nugent assisted at the sale. We also have claim boxes in Wag- horn's, Adamo's and the Liquor Store."' The local Cancer So- ciety Executive is made up of Chairman Mary Hale, Secretary Caro- line McLeod, Education Chairman Marianne McDougall, and Service to Patients Chairman Mary O'Neil. Cancer research is costly. An average of sixty-one cents out of every dollar raised by the Canadian Cancer Society's April Cam- paign goes directly to re- search. The Society's 1983 theme, '"'We Need You Now More Than Ever", refers to the Society's concern that some peo- ple may feel that due to the success of the fund raising efforts of Terry Fox, continued public support of the society is not necessary. For that reason 100 per cent of the Terry. Fox Funds went to the National Cancer Institute. The money raised during the Society's An- nual, April Campaign will fund existing re- search programmes as well as the society's on- going Education and pa- tient service program- mes. The latter two pro- grams represent four- teen and sixteen per- cent of the society's income respectively, leaving just nine per cent for administration and fund raising costs. You are asked to con- tribute once a year to a battle that is fought the year round. It's up to you to ensure that the Canadian Cancer So- ciety's April Campaign will continue to support research, education and patient services throughout the year.
