Parents of youngsters, especially babies, should think seriously about how well their child is hearing. Without good hearing a baby cannot learn to speak well and learning will be difficult. If a hearing loss is found early much can be done to improve his hearing and to help him speak. But first it must be found. A four month old baby, whether awake or sleeping, will likely respond to nearby sounds. Startle responses .and crying are common at this "age if sharp, loud sounds such as a dish fal- ling or dog barking -is heard. A nine month old baby 'should turn: his head toward sounds made at his side or behind. He will likely look to- ward a nearby ringing telephone. A year old child should be repeating sounds and definitely taking an interest in 'sounds around him. Two' year olds usually understand simple speech and take direction from parents without seeing the parent's lips. If your baby does not do these ..things some concern should be felt. The baby's doctor should be notified and a hearing test ' and an ear specialist examination be consider- ed. ] The Hospital for Sick Children's Mobile Hear -ing Clinic travels, in Ontario throughout the . Year searching for the youngster with a hear- ing loss. The audiologist on board is trained and experienced in identifying hearing loss at the earliest of ages. Last year over two thous '-and hearing tests were performed as the unit travelled for ten ponths to thirty-seven Ontar- io Communities. The clinic will be visiting Terrace Bay on August 2, 3, 4 and 5th. It will be located at the McCausland Hospital. The clinic is operat- "ed by the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, REMBER 645 Norah Crescent, Thunder Bay, Ontario.
