HOW MUCH DO WE CARE? Throughout the civilised world more and more people seem to expect governments to look after the basic necessities of life. And the same attitude seems to apply to overseas aid. cont'dieu,... Of course we would now consider it unthinkable that education in Canada should be only for those who can afford it - or health for those who can pay the doctors' bills. But what about the situation of people who are conveniently out of sight in the developing countries? If it's unthinkable for Canadian education to be other than universal, why is it that in some coun- tries only one child in ten can get even a rudimen- tary education? If it's unthinkable for Canadian health care to be only for the rich, why is it that smallpox, blindness, severe malnutrition and cholera are still a way of life for millions in Asia, Africa and South America? As Buckminster Fuller said 'If you can get to the moon, ... you can make the world work." Smallpox can be quickly prevent; blindness caus- ed by disease or malnutrition so easily averted. Education is a matter of training, brains and books- all of which could be readily provided - if we really cared. Of course it takes money, but at the moment Canada's total contribution to UNICEF, generous though it is, is one hundreth of what Canadians spend on cosmetics. Is that a true meas- ure of our concern, as individuals and as a country? cont'd page 8 ...... CLUB LOUNGE PLAN TO ATTEND Terrace Bay Men's Curling Club SEMI ANNUAL MEETING OCTOBER 18 7 PM.
