TERRACE BAY NEWS Vol . 14 No. 11 Serving the District March 18, 1971 COUNCIL QUOTES Terr ace Bay Town Council met in regul ar sess-- ion with all present and Reeve Cavanaugh presiding The first item of correspondence was a letter from St. Martin's Separate School, requesting per- mission to canvass the town during the week from March 29th to April, selling Easter chocolates. Permission was granted after some discussion took place. Policy reccommendations are being con- sidered by Council. Further advice on this matter will be forthcoming. Council submitted an appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board, over equalization reports for apportionment of 1971 costs for Pinewood Court, Home for the Aged. A letter was read from the Township of Marathon stating that the council had lodged an appeal about the above mentioned report. Council sent a letter to Mr. E.J. Morgan, Direct Director of the Lake Superior Board of Education, suggesting Council would be available to meet with the committee studying the proposed amalga- mation and requested consideration be given to holding the March 20th meeting of the Lake Superior Board in the Schreiber-Terrace Bay area. A letter reply from the Director acknowledged receipt of the letter and stated the matter of changing the stated place of meeting would be turned over to the Chairman of the Board, Mr. Wainwright. The Lake Superior Board of Education requested payment of the first instalment of 1971 educational levy, based on 25% of previous year's require- ments. PUBLIC SPEAKING WELL ATTENDED An audience of over three hundred were in Schreiber High School to encourage speakers from St. Martin's Separate School in Terrace Bay and Holy Angels Sepatate School in Schreiber. This, the second annual event, was sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. The winners of each three groups received individual trophies and a plaque to hang in their school . Other prizes were presented to the other students participating in the contest. The judges were Dr. B.A. McDonald, Terrace Bay Mrs. D.H. Brown, Schreiber; G.R. Saumur, prin- cipal Schreiber public school and Gary Speck was the timer. There were fourteen contestants, with Jeff Reid, Schreiber winning the primary group, grades two and three; Franca Costa, Schreiber winning the junior group, grades four, five six; and Linda Levigne, Schreiber, winning the senior group, grades seven and eight. Mrs. Jane Dampier was pianist for the evening. Anthony Speziale, vice=principal of Holy Angels School, welcomed the audience, saying the full.house was a great encouragement to the young speakers and much appreciated by the schools and the Knights of Columbus who sponsored the event. He thanked the judges who were taking on a difficult task, the young entertainers who would play during the intermission, and the Catholic Parent Teachers" Association in Schreiber who were providin coffee and lunch for the evening.
