FEBRUARY 4, 1971 TERRACE BAY NEWS LEGION PLAN BONSPIEL The Sports' Committee of the Royal Canadian Le gion, Brancn 109, Schreiber have planned their annual bonspiel tor February 12th and 13th. Curlers are asked to sign the draw list posted in the Legion giving the position they play, before 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 10th, The fee is four dollars a person or $16.00 a rink. These fees will include a supper in the Legion on Saturday and the spiel is open ro all members, regular, honorary and club, the ladies' auxiliary with husbands and escorts. Non=-curlers may also enjoy the supper in the Legion for $1.00 a plate. Live entertainment, with refreshments will be enjoyed in the Legion on Friday and Saturday nights. REBEKAH'S PLAN COMING EVENTS Ruby Rebekah Lodge, at their meeting on January 27th decided to present a bursary of $100.00 to the grade twelve or thirteen student with the highest standing in the Commercial course, the award to be given at the annual commencement exercise. It was also decided to serve a luncheon to thirty- four students and two leaders who will be taking the United Nations' Pilgrimage Bus Tour, arriving in Schreiber July 14th. A Valentine card party was planned for February 10th, following the meeting. Guests may be invited and the admission is 50¢. Mrs. Victoria Winters will convene this event. Penny auction will be played after the meeting on February 24th. The C.P.T. committee distributed tickets for a draw on a brocade bedspread, the draw to be made at the penny auction March 26th. Mrs. Jean Fisher read the sick and visiting report, asking members to report to Mrs. Chris Morris the names of members who are ill. Flowers and cards have been sent to members presently in hospital . Mrs. Helen Wallace displayed cards for Easter and other occasions which she has for sale. After the meeting Mrs. Margaret Helmink of Terrace Bay showed a film on retardation, with a short talk on the subject. Mrs. Beth Macadam, noble grand and, Mrs. Jean Fisher, P.N.G. acting vice grand weré in charge of the meeting. Lunch was served by Mesdames Helen Wallace, | Alice Sparkes, Marion Simon, Beth Macadam and PAGE 15. Victoria Winters. 1 PATRICIA McGRATH TO REPRESENT HOLY ANGELS Patricia McGrath was selected by the judges at the public speaking contest in Holy Angels Separate school to represent the school in the public speaking contest being sponsored by Ontario Hydro, for elementary schools from Red Rock to Manitouwadge . There were fifteen contestants from grades two to eight, with winners in addition to Patricia being ~ Dianne- Dietrich grade 5; Kimberly Karns grade 6; Lynda Levigne grade 7; Sylvia Speziale grade 3. These last winners will enter competition sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, the event to be held in Schreiber High School with the date yet to be set. Gaetane Chicoine was timer for the contest. The judges, Mrs. L.R. McCuaig, John Driehuis, and Don Beno, had a most difficult task because of the uniform excellence of the young orators ~ their 'competent covering of their subject, their sincerity and clear delivery. The marking in fact would have been easy (except for the uniformity of the performance) with the foll- owing guidance in marking = Topic development of subject matter, organization of material, treatment of topic; platform manner, poise, posture, personal~ ity, voice - audibility, quality, range; Language - effectiveness of vocabulary, grammatical usage, sentence variety, enunciation, pronunciation. Overall impression = sincerity, enthusiasm, force= fullness, audience appreciation. The topics covered a wide variety of interests = the junior division =~ Music of Today; J.F. Kennedy; Hockey; Christmas; Many Faces of Love; Terry Sawchuck; Dogs; Timejand in the senior division = Teenagers and Drugs; How We are Killing Ourselves; Teenagers of Today; Snakes Among Man's Best Friends; What's Happening to Our World; Hi-Jacking and Car Accidents. Anthony Speziale, vice principal, was m.C. for the oecasion which was held in the school auditorium. PARENT-TEACHER MEETING Bill Campbell presided for the January meeting of the Catholic Parent Teachers" Association when plans were made to serve a lunch at the public speaking contest being sponsored by the Knights of Columbus on February 28th.
