REEVE HARNESS ADDRESSES W.l. MEETING Roll call at the January meeting of the Schreiber Women's Institute was answered with donations o used men's ties and nylons to be sent to the Pinewood Court for craft work. The motto for the meeting was "Do not resent growing old because many are denied this privilege." Mrs. Vic Hannam of Ottawa and Mis. AR. Dejeet of Waterloo were welcomed as guests by Mrs. Joe Campbell who presided. Minutes were read by Mrs. Charles Todesco and the treasurer's report given by Mrs. Fred Harness in the absence of Mrs. Bill Thrower. Plans were made to fete Schreiber's New Year's Baby - Jeremy James, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Spikula. Members were asked to bring early pictures of themselves with their gifts. Following the meeting,Reeve F.V. Harness, vice- chairman of the Board of Pinewood Court, spoke on the establishment of the home. The first discussions were in 1964, with the districts wanting the home built in one of the districts but the decision was to build one in Fort William first, this being the only site having all the necessary services and facilities available for immediate con~ struction. Sixteen municipalities were to share in the home which was opened on March 4, 1968. There is now the possibility of a small home being placed in Geraldton, as an-extension of Pinewood Court. And an extension of the present Court seems necessary, with the government to pay 70% of the cost and the balance be shared among the participa~ ting communities - Schreiber's share a possible $2,000.00. The cost of patient care is set at $12.60 a day but in addition to actual care, are the many occupations offered each day for comfort and relaxation. The Schreiber Legion provided a pool table and the Lions a P.A. system and projector, with many individual gifts. There are presently nine people from Schreiber enjoying the home. Mrs. Margaret Helmink of Terrace Bay, represent- ing the Schreiber-Terrace Bay Association for the Mentally Retarded gave a talk on the work and aims of the association in general, with a film shown by Rev. E.C. Prinselaar. Mrs. Helmink stated the purpose of the association is to educate the public at large on mental retardation continued page 16 ee vem a sd
