Vol. 12 No. 42 Serving the District October 23, 1969 OPTIMISTIC OUTLOOK FOR CONFEDERATION COLLEGE COUNCIL QUOTES Somewhat overshadowed by the publicity given to Lakehead University the past couple of years, the progress and plans of Confederation College in Thun- der Bay, were brought into focus in this district over the weekend. Kimberly-Clark Pulp & Paper Co. Ltd. were hosts on Friday night to the President and Board of Govern- ors of the College and interested groups of district residents who met with them in the lounge of Terrace Bay Motor Hotel . The College officials and their wives were wel- comed by Mr. J.A. Ferrier who invited Dr..C .M. Johnston to address the assembly. The Board of Governors are headed by Dr. John- ston of Port Arthur who outlined the building program, Some 600 students are now enrolled at the College and projected plans call for expansion covering the next de cade to eventually accomodate 2,000 stud- ents. The 600 student figure mentioned by Dr. Johnston is only part of the scene as outlined by College Pres- ident D.A.R. Bradshaw who completed the picture by including the extension courses offered at Kenora and Dryden, evenings classes and courses taken on a part time basis. College level education has been part of the sys- tem in Europe, Great Britain, and the United States for many years. Technicians and others trained by colleges are a large part of the labor force in these countries. Many of the students in Canadian Universities might better start at College level where their diploma could ultimately lead to a degree if they so de- sired. Reeve Cavanaugh and all councillors met in regular session on Tuesday night to conduct Town- ship business. The Improvement District of Mara- thon expressed their thanks in a letter for the cour- tesy received by them at a meeting held in Terrace Bay with the Board of Management for Pinewood Court, Home for the Aged. Jack Stokes wrote a letter to Reeve Catstatak: suggesting the importance of attending a Fall Nort! ern Development Conference to be held in the Lakehead. Topics to be discussed included the provision of services, especially transportation in - Northwestern Ontario, and the development of secondary industry . The Workmen's Compensation Board advised they entended the maximum coverage to the members of the Volunteer Fire Department, under the Workmen's Compensation Act. The C .P. and T. requested permission to hold an All Sorts Blitz in Terrace Bay on Nov. 21st. Permission granted. The Recreation Committee recommended that Mrs. Ellen Hodgkiss be given an additional res- ponsibility allowance, during the absence of a Recreation Director . The Crown Attorney requested that Reeve Cavanaugh and Clerk Bill Hanley select jurors, as has been done in past years. The Ladies Auxiliary to the Roya Legion, Branch 223, request- ed permission to hold a Poppy SAFETY PAYS Day on November 11th. LONG-LIFE DIVIDENDS | Canadian Permission granted.
