B. Lidkea of Windsor are visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. Lidkea - Mrs. W. Holland leaves this weekend to enjoy a family reunion in Fredericton, N.B. - two sisters and a brother live in that area and three will come from Maine for the occasion. The names of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Eady of Fort William were inadvertenly omitted from the list of friends attending the 60th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. George Moore. Doran Kragero and Barry Miller are the first in Schreiber to enter the Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology - The School of Mining in Hailey bury, which offers a three year course in mining technology. In the 22 years it has been opened, over 800 have completed the course and are now employed all over Canada and in many other countries. Mr. and Mrs. P. Page of Port Arthur visited with Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Whent and other relations this week. : Mrs. A. O'Driscoll of Pembroke is visiting Mr. and Mrs. T. O'Driscoll . WOMEN'S INSTITUTE RESUMES MEETINGS The Women's Institute resumed its regular meeting on Tuesday, September 10th with Mrs. Harvey McCanna presiding. The roll call was answered by giving the name of the member's first school teacher and where they began school. Mrs. J. Morris said she staryed school in Killarney, Man., and her teacher was Miss Mary Forrester, later, by marriage SEPTEMBER 19, 1968 becoming her aunt. Mrs. C. Todesco began school in Webbwood, Ont. her teacher being Miss Barbara Smith, later becoming Mrs. Hanley, the mayor of the town and the first woman mayor in Canada. Their motto for the meeting was 'Train a Child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.' The correspondence included a letter from Mrs. M. Brownlee, suggesting that the present Home Economics and Health Convenors assume, the role of Safety conveners also, and plan programs to promote interest in safety measures . M.T. Chamberlain, Agricultural representative for this district, wrote enclosing an antidote chart for emergency doses in the home. Literature and a copy of the Canadian Bill of Rights was received from Ottawa. This will be discussed at the October meeting and a program arranged for which a speaker and a film will be available. The new programs for the year's activities were dis- tributed. Miss Conrad, Home Economics district , representative wrote giving information on the 4H homemaking course available. A discussion on the scholarship given annually by Schreiber Women's Institute to the grade 8 student in both elementary school with the highest standing, was discussed. Following the meeting, a contest played was won by Mrs. McCanna and lunch was served by Mrs. J. Morris and her committee . Chureh Discusses Welfare Problems George Gordon presided. for the regular meeting of the United Church official board with 18 attending. In response to a request from the town a lengthy discussion on adminis- tering the welfare fund was held. The problem 1s_ that OPP| which has disbursed the fund -- set up by the town -- no longer wants the responsibility and since the town Office is closed evenings and Saturday and Sun- day, other ways of assisting peo- ple must be found. The town office, of course, could act during regular office hours. It was finally agreed to have Rev. Prinselaar contact Father Cano, and, if he was will- ing to take part, they would meet the town council for fur- ther discussion. Mrs, Prinselaar described the need for more teachers in the Sunday school and proposed changes. In particular there 'was a need to separate the jnursery school age from the old- er five and six year olds. It was agreed to have Mr. Prinselaar and the pastoral committee meet representatives of the Rossport Church to dis- cuss services for this year. The regular meeting night was changed to the First Thurs- day of each month at 7:30 in order that more members will be able to attend. It was decided to have the annual visitation completed by ithe end of October.
