TERRACE BAY NEWS Circulation Terrace Bay & Schreiber REEVE AND COUNCILLORS INAUGURATED At 4:00 P.M. on Friday, July 3: 3rd, the newly elected Reeve and four Councillors of the Township of Terrace Bay met in the Municipal Office. Very Rev. Dean E,A.Gallagher, Doctor Arthur Lavender, Mr. F.A,Strutt and W. Hanly were also present for the Ceremony, The Reeve, Mr. J.A.Ferrier, opened the meeting by outlining the procedure to be : Dean Gallagher prayed for Divine Guidance for the group who then read the oath of office in unison--were indivually sworn in by F.A. Strutt and then each affixed their signature to the oath. The Oath of Allegiance was similarly admin- istered and Mr.Ferrier in turn performed the same duty for Mr. Strutt and Mr. Hanly. Dr. A. Lavender delivered an inaugural address, reminding those present of the words of the Psalmist "Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it". He concluded by remarking that "it is a great privilege to have been chosen by your fellow citizens to represent them at the municipal level of Government. May God giive you health and strength, grace and wisdom to measure up to your responsibilities and to discharge your stewardship." Mr, Ferrier thanked Dean Gallagher and Dr. Lavender for their participation in the servic and immediately entered on the business part of the meeting, In_a very short time the appointuwents of Mr Strutt as Clerk-Treasurer and Assessor and that of his assistant W.Hanly were ratified; a number of iminent problems were discussed and left with Councillors for further thought and future decision and a decision on day and time of future Council meetings was reached: namely, 4:30 P.M. on the second and fourth Wednesday in each month, with emergent meet- ings to be called as required. Mr.Ferrier announced Committee formation and appointments as follows:- Municipal Personnel & Public Works - J.A,Ferrier and J, Duncan Finance and Fire - J, Heenan and D. Evans-Smith Police, Water & Sanitation - J. Duncan and Mrs.B,. Bouchard Health, Welfare & Recreation - . Mrs,.B.Bouchard and J, Heenan Chamber of Commerce, Public Relations and Town Planning - D,. Evans-Smith and J, A. Ferrier It was very evident that a spirit of enthus- iasm and optimism pervaded the entire group but it was also very evident that this same group start with over a decade of "good government" and the accompanying "good experience" behind them and that they are in the fortunate posi- tion of having that experience right in their midst. Shortly after dark Wed- Vol.2, No. swimming pool. in Fort William, 27 July 9th, 1959 nesday evening a gigantic fireworks (both aerial and ground) display was shown at the Well over two hundred cars, anc; a few busloads from the town and surrounding town were on hand to hear their new Reeve, Mr, John Ferrier, state that with the launch- ing of the first rocket, the transition from the old Improvement District of Terrace Bay to the new Township status would be completed, ' Mr.Ferrier also thanked Ken Ward, Recreation. | Director and the group of men who had assist- | ed him in presenting the magnificent display | of fireworks. A street dance in front of the Recreation | i | 5 } f j | Centre concluded the day's activities and a good attendance of young and old enjoyed the music of Frank Diano and his orchestra. Rows ; of gaily coloured lights decorated the streets, for the occasion. i COSTA SHOWS HITTING POWER AS COMETS SPLIT | GAMES WITH EAST ENDS "Sunday afternoon on the Terrace Bay Diamond: the Terrace Bay Comets and the Fort William | East Ends divided a twin-bill. The East tid | won the first game 4-3, scoring the winning run in the top of the 7th and the Comets came back to win the second game 5-4, scoring the two winning runs in the bottom of the 7th. | In the first game Leonard started on the | mound for Terrace and was relieved by Taylor in the 7th inning, Both pitchers turned in | a good effort and deserved a better fate than | losing, In the second game Taylor went the | distance and chalked up his fourth victory in | the League versus one defeat. Terrace Bay was. outhit in both games but in the second one they made their hits count, A, Costa was the | hitting star for the Comets banging out a triple and two doubles for the day. The split moved Terrace Bay into fourth place in the League Standings --- 1/2 game ahead of Red Rock.
