SUPERIORS CINCH FIRST PLACE IN N.S.H.L. STANDINGS -- by J. Cummings Last Tuesday night Terrace Bay skated to an 8-4 victory over the Schreiber Lions to clinch first spot in the N.S.H.L. The game played before a crowd of 850 people was very close checking in spots and kept everyone on the edge of their seats, Schreiber, out to win this game to gain a play-off spot opened with very close check- ing but as the game progressed seemed to tire under the pressure put on by the Sup- eriors, No one player on the Terrace Bay team should be singled out as a star, because they all played hard and rugged hockey to the last man, and after-all 'team work! is a big factor in winning any type of a game, whether it be "Hockey" or "Tiddly-winks", For Schreiber, Franchi and Gavin were their best with Gavin stop- ping rubber from all angles as the Superiors blasted 38 shots at him during the three periods of the game, Franchi, although he didn't hit the scoring sheet was a continu- ous threat to Terrace Bay and proved his worth in his checking ability. The officiating was not exactly up to par and both teams suffered fromthe lack of it. It is only fortuate thet no one re- ceived any serious injury during the game although at times feelings ran quite high. Penalties, conspicuous by their absence in the first two periods suddenly mounted up in the dying minutes of the third period, these with the exception of a misconduct penalty were for violations over-looked in the previous two stanzas, and tended to arouse players and fans alike as to the - officials decisions, It is very fortumate that the game itself wasn't a deciding © championship affair of a best of seven series, for had it been mayhem would have ruled the roost. : Jim Moro opened the scoring at 5:31 on a fine goal mouth pass-out from Marvin Osmar, Moro skating across the goal mouth deflected Osmars pass into the lower right hand corner giving Gavin no chance to make a save. Souliere banged in the tying counter for Schreiber at 10:49 in a mix-up in front (Cont. on next col,) Page 6 SUPERIORS CINCH FIRST PLACE (Cont.) of the Terrace Bay net , Massaro getting the assist on the play at 14:19. Walter Diduch blasted a 20 footer past Gavin on a power attack when he receive a Blue, Line pass out from Chorney - skated in and picked his opening and let fire, This goal put Terrace ahead by one and ended the first period scoring. Penalties in the lst period - Marvin Osmar (Mis- conduct). int The second period was four minutes old when Maurice Osmar-Osmar teamed with Jack Lang to put Terrace ahead 3-l, Two minutes later at .601 Maurice Osmar got his second goal on a breakaway rush with Dave Desrosiers; Desrosiers broke up a Schreiber rush, and started out with Osmar, fed him a lead pass and Maurice made no mistakes as he wefit in, pulled Gavin and flipped it in the comer, to put Terrace ahead 4-1, The Lions roared back at 11.08 and 11.24 with two quick goals, by Hade and Massaro and put themselves back in the running, at this particular point of the game they carried a majority of the play and seemed to have checked Terrace Bay to a walk, Dave Whalen snapped Terrace out of their daze when he teamed with Milani and poured one past Gavin at 14.16 to put the Superiors ahead by 2 goals. This goal was one of the neatest of the whole evening as Milani picking up the puck at centre - stick handled his way past the Schreiber team and as he cut in on goal, crowded by two Schreiber stalwarts . he pin-pointed a goal mouth pass on Whalsan's stick. Whalen made no mistakes as he blasted it from close in on the open side of the net. The line of Moro, Osmar and Osmar, using some "Fancy-dan" footwork and passing ability put the Superiors 3 up at 1925. Marvin Osmar received a beauti- ful flat pass from Moro as he cut in on goal; he pulled Gavin out of positian and flicked it in the open right hand side of the net to end the second period scoring - Penalties - None, (Cont. on page 7)
