ICE CHIPS Sunday aftemoon Terrace Bay Superiors were again superior in all departments when they whipped last year's:-NsS.HibLe ~: champion Marathon Mercuries to the tune of 5-2 before a near capacity crowl of 975 roaring hockey fans, Those who attended were treated with a bruising "knock em down - drag em out" affair, with pelnty of brilliant hockey thrown in, and it was by far the best game to date in our local arena. The game itself was very fast and ' brilliant plays were seen on both sides although the Superiors had the edge in play in the first perind they were unable to flash the light and the period -ended a scoreless tie, Jim Moro scored the first goal of th game at 1,41 of the second period ona . pass from Milani, Only to have Henderson nulify the lead at 18.25 on a pass from Romano, The second period ended:in-a- 1-1 tie. Marathon opened the third period scor- ing with a goal by Souther at 5.47 assist- ed by Geroux, Six minutes later "Winky" Whalen, tied the score on a pass from Desrosiers. This was followed by a goal by Ray Stachiw from Bond at 12.45. Cy Brassard put Terrace Bay up two goals when he fired a sizzler past Jorgenson at 15.11 and Whalen got his second goal of the game on a beautiful passing play from Marvin Osmar at 16.08. This. ended the scoring in the game with Terrace Bay winning hands down 5-2, A total of 24 penalties' were handed out by referees Gauthier and Pineault with Marathon receiving 14 including 2 mis- conduct penalties and a game misconduct penalty to Bolan, and Rk. Morgan respectively. Terrace followed fairly close behind with 10 itinor penalties all fairly well evenly - distributed, Every player on the Superiors deserves the "Big Pat on the Back" routine, as they seemed to play their hearts out, They showed "plenty of spirit" and "Get up and go", Although it is hard to pick out an (Cont. on next col,) Fage 6 IGE CHIPS (Cont.). °. outstanding star on the team it is felt that a few "Honourable Mentions" should be passed around, in excess of the "Star Ratings" for 'the whole team, Desrosiers played a tremendous game' on Defence and showed his worth when we were men short and heavily pressed by Marathon's attackers. "Winky" Whalen showed his hockey ability in potting two goals and master-' minding the team throughout the game completely out-smarting his rival playing coach on all occasions. Marvin Osmar showed up very brilliantl: on thé ice with fancy side stepping _ and expert puck handling and was robbed "on numerous occasions of assists after setting up plays only to have his wing men miss the nets. : Moro, Milani, Brassard, Stachiw, 'W. Diduch and Lang all were towers of "strength in their respective departments, and gave their all: to a Terrace Bay victory. 'In the nets Bobby Weaver was his old self stopping plenty of rubber in the second and third period, and any goals scored on him were the impossible to stop kind.
