ZONE RECREATION MEETING HELD IN TERRACE BAY SATURDAY NOVEMBER 5TH "Representatives from Marathon, Red Rock, Longlac, Toronto, Schreiber Community Frogrammes Branch, Nipigon and Terrace Bay numbering 22 in all, attended the Area Rec- reation heeting for East Thunder Bay Dist- rict held in Terrace Bay Recreation Centre, Terrace Bay Ontario on Saturday, November 5th. The visitors were welcomed by Mr. MM, O. Nelson, Chairman of the Terrace Bay Recreation Committee, and the programme for the day was introduced and explained. lir, A. Driffield, Terrace Bay Recreation Committee member for Finance, was the speaker for the mowing session - his topic being "Budgets and Cost Controls for Rec- reation Programmes", He described the word "Budget" and outlined its-uses and advantages in conducting a successful re- creation programme in a community or small town, Various budget plans were reviewed and the speaker stressed the im- portance of adhering to the planned budget. Mr, Jack Pringle, personnel represent- ative from Longlac, Ontario, then led the meeting in a discussion period, at which time questions pertaining to Budgets were asked by the members and answered by Mr, Driffield, . At one point of this discussion period, Mr. Jack Paterson of Community Pro- grammes Branch, Department of Education, Foro William, was requested to present to tne meeting his diagram illustrating the financial support progress of recreation committees to various local activities. Copies of the Terrace Bay Recreation Assoc- jation's financial reports were distributed to the meeting and used as an example to guide the discussion on 3udgets. After a five-minute recess, Mr, Jack Paterson conducted the meeting in a discuss- ion on a plan to centralize the recreation facilities. of the communities included in the East Thunder Bay district, The ad- vantages and possibilities of such a plan were presented, together with the difficul- ties which may be encountered. At the end of this discussion period, the reoresentatives adjourned to the Hotel Terrace where they enjoyed a delicious luncheon, with the Terrace-Bay Recreation Committee acting as host,' Following the luncheon, the visiting members were given a conducted tour of the town, after which they returned to the Recreation Centre and comtinued with the programme for the day, under the guidance of Mr. Jack Paterson. Some of the subjects discusses were - vandalism of teen-agers; the purchasing system of the different recreation groups; Hallowe'en parties; how to present sports to children and help them to maintain them; playgrounds and their value to a'community. A coffee break followed this portion of the programme, after which the question "Ts Our Zone Pattern a Good Plan?" was raised, and an explanation of the formation of the Ontario Recreation Association and its functions was given by Mr. li. 0.
