The figure skating blade is curved so that you can go around in-circles and the bottom of the blades are hollow ground to provide two separate skating edges, outer and inner, The left side of the right foot is the inside edge of your right foot, and the right side of your left foot is the inside edge of your left foot. The edge to the outside of your -boot is called the outside edge, If you go forward on either edge, you are executing a forward inside or outside edge, depending upon which edge you are skating. When you go backwards you can do either an inside of outside back edge. However to skate on a true edge (Cont. on next col.) Page 9 THE EDGES (Cont. ) you must lean your entire body, including the blade, to one side or the other depending upon which edge of blade you are skating. This applies whether you are moving forward or backward around a circle, Always the lean is inward toward the centre of the cirele, Beginners can learn to skate on edges by skating in circles to the left and right, stepping one foot over the other, The left circle is started by stroking forward on the out- side edge of the left blade, then stepping forward and over with the right foot placing in down on an inside edge. Then back to the outside edge on the left blade and so on, each time stepping forward and over with the right foot which is on the outside of the circle, The body should lean slightly to the left and to the inside of the circle, Circles to the right are skated in the same manner but with opposite edges of the blades and the body leaning slightly to the right. Beginners who practice this exercise will Soon find they are able to balance on each foot for five or six feet before taking a new stroke and by keeping the upper part of the body motionless, the beginner will soon begin to get the feel of a true edge, When you have found: your balance "on the forward edges, Try the backward edges in the same way, Skate backward circles to the right and left, crossing the outside foot over and hold a slight lean to the inside of the circle, I hope all of you.children.in Terrace Bay interested in figure skating will work hard and learn to skate on edges. Only after you are able to skate on edges can you go on and learn the more intricate end advanced figures, dance steps, jumps and spins that make figure skating an interesting and exciting sport, Next week the subject will be "The Circle Eights", Glub Professional, Oeteo NOTE OF THANKS The student's of ™.B.H.S. would like to thank the parents and all those who helped in any way to make our Tea and Bake Sale a success, Thanks for support--- ing us. 0--0--0
