"HON. DR.' Ww. J. DUNLOP OFFICIALLY.OPENS ST, MARTIN'S SEFARATE SCHOOL (cort, } Without question, Dr. W. J. Dunlop proved to be one of the finést and most interesting speakers ever to visit Terrace Bay. In emphasizing a particular point he employed the enjoyable medium of a "story" and time and again regaled the gathering with a few of the more humorous incidents in his long and lengthy service in the field of-education, "The Home - the Church and the School should be the individual's primary interest in any community and with this in mind each of us will enjoy a happy and pleasureful life," Dr, Dunlop remarked, and added "thé teaching profession as a whole should strive continually to teach their students the importance of democracy - its meaning - end the benefit derived from a way of life such as ours," In this way only will we finally combat effectively this 'evil, devilish communism' which threatens to destroy our very existence," Dr. Dunlop stressed the value of "knowing where you are going" and illustrat- ed this by pointing out that when a young boy, or girl, comes home from school and deciares he or she is going to be a Doctor when he or she grows up and in the next week or so change' the mind and expresses a desire to become a lawyer - the parents shouldn't become alarmed over this change of heart --- the important thing to remember is that they are maintaining an objective in life and this is the desired situation, Once again he underscored the necessity of a greater interest in community affairs on the part of its community members and observed " we should be willing and ready to take our place in the community - with- out remuneration - without seeking personal glory - with a view only of bottééring our communities so that our children will one day take up the example set by their parents," At the conclusion of his address the Honourable Dr, Dunlop said " by the power vested in re as Minister of Education I do duly declare St. Martin's Separate School, in the town of Terrace Bay, formally and officially opened to serve this community in the manner and for the purpose for which it has been erected," At this point Mr. D. Bilodeau, of Bilodeau and Heath, School Contractors, presented the keys of the school to Dr. Dunlop, and on behalf of the Sehool Board Mr. Gombola accepted the keys from the (cont. in next col.) Page HON. DR. W. J. DUNLOP OFFICIALLY OPENS ST. MARTIN'S SEPARATE SCHOOL (cont. Minister and in turn presented them to Mr. Kenney the School Principal. Mr. Kenney, in accepting the keys on behalf of the teaching staff, Misses Quarrie and Dooling, expressed his pleasure on such an honour and would endeavour to teach the children coming under his supervision in such a way that they would grow up to become fully educated Canadians along the lines that Dr, Dunlop had hoped they would be. Don Boudreau then extended special thanks to Messrs, Porter, Laundy, Shemanski and Paget, as well as the Contractors, for each of their personal and combined contributions of effort and guidance which added up to the fine school of which Terrace Bay was rightfully proud. George Wardrope extended his personal congratulations, and with Peter Gombola's closing remarks, the ceremonies were brought to a fitting conclusion, The Ladies of the Home and School Association, under the Convenorship of Mrs. Betty Cavanaugh, provided refreshments for the gathering and are to be commended on their excellent table setting, 0-0-0 BLOOD DONOR CLINIC (con't) made 20 or more donations, and suffer no i11 effects, 6, It takes only 30 minutes to make a gift of life to a fellow Canadian. 7, No diet restrictions are necessary be- fore donating. 8, Every person who attends a clinic is provided with an individual donor card showing his blood group and Rh factor or type.
