10 NORSHORE SENTINEL â€" THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1960 Second Event Winners The Don Stevens rink of Nipigon, left to right, Don Stevens, skip, Art Ashworth, third, Gosta Sjolander, second and Eric Shucksmith, lead. Third Event Winners The Morley Anderson rink of Red Rock, left to right, skip Morley, third Gord Stewart, second Lloyd Wilson and lead Ernie McDonald. THEY ORGANIZE BONSPIEL . . . THEN WIN IT! Wilf Drysdale and Jim Foulds have the right idea ... go out and organize a bonspiel and then win the big bauble. It probably wasn't planned that way but the two committee members of the second annual Red Rock Legion "fall" 'spiel ended up receiving the Sid Williams trophy and suitable prizes at the conclusion of three days' play . . . and curling . . . Sunday night at Red Rock. Wilf skipped the winning rink which defeated Hal Lawson of Marathon 17-5 in the final. Import Ernie Cameron of Fort William played third while Jim Foulds was lead. Red Rock's answer to Bruce Marsh, Don Dawes held up the lead end. It was a clean sweep for the Nipigon-Red Rock area with the Don Stevens rink of Nipigon winning the all-Nipigon second event final 11-3 over the Ben Long rink and a Red Rock foursome skipped by Morley Anderson defeating clubmate Wild Bill Marchant 11-3 in the third event. A record 30 rinks, two short of capacity, took in the annual season-starter and officials predict the event will have to be moved to the arena ice to accommodate all the rinks next year. Port Arthur, Fort William, Beardmore, Geraldton, Terrace Bay, Schreiber and Marathon were all represented. Highlight of the spiel was an eight-ender, scored by the Ab Berrey rink of Geraldton over Bill Baker of Nipigon. Ironically, Baker and Berrey were old school chums. Corby representative Ernie Cameron made a presentation to the rink. BEHIND THE GLASS: A hand to the hard-working committee which consisted of Frank and Bunny McAuley, Roy Evans, Wilf Drysdale and Jim Foulds. The 'spiel ran off smoothly and there is every reason to believe it will be a big event on the calender in the future. First rink out was the McKinley rink of Nipigon although from the long look on Harley Couthard's face he must have been a close second. Bill Dwyer, who played the judge in a humorous skit at the banquet, handed out a severe sentence to Lome Weldon of Red Rock. The score was 17-1. The hidden prize went to Fraser of Schreiber. Beardmore's lone rink was skipped by the wily Frenchman Jerry Poirier although they'll tell you Sandy Kuzik is the real strategist on the rink. Why would they call Art Ashworth "Steambath"? Sulo Maki, the mayor of Hurkett, was down lining up rinks for the annual bonspiel next June. He swears he's related to Nipigon's new arena manager Ray Maki. The real attention-getter at the 'spiel was the special teepee rigged up behind the glass, presumably to scare opposing curlers. Veteran competitors Bill Joss and Arnold Popp got in the money . . . fourth place in the secend event. Ben Long, Oliver Santala, Ed Leskinen and George Heald edged them out and then lost to Stevens. Gerry Brennan's rink involved in a time mixup and had to forfeit their first game. Gerry was in a council meeting in Nipigon when his rink was suppose to be playing, unbenounced to them. Oh, well, there are bound to be a few mixups. Results on page 14.
