RECEPTION NEAR By CHUCK McOUAT The giant television tower on Mount Baldy in Port Arthur should be in operation within "one month to five weeks." Director of operations Gerhard Buetcw said last night that barring complications, the nine-ton, 100-foot antennae would be lifted to the top of the 600-foot tower as soon as the proper weather conditions prevail. It is necessary to have a day when there is less than five miles per hour wind. As soon as the tower is up it is just a matter of testing before residents of North Shore communities will have increased television reception. If all goes according to plan reception in the Nipigon area head," while other areas as far away as Schreiber and even possibly Marathon, will have a marked improvement. It, of course, will not be known how effective the tower is until the antennae is up. It was at first thought that work would stop at the tower with the unfortunate death of Hector McDougall, owner of CFCJ-TV two weeks ago. However, Mr. Bueiow assured the Sentinel that work is going ahead according to plan. Mr. Buetow stressed the difficulties to be faced in lifting the giant antennae 600-foot in the air. This is the most important phase of the operations and, should complications set in, it could set completion of work back considerably. All that is needed now is the should be "as good as the Lake- calm day. WELCOME BACK ARCHIE ARCHIE JAMES of Marathon, centre, just couldn't stay away from his old position as treasurer of the North Shore Hockey league. Archie was installed as treasurer I again at the semi-annual league I meeting in Terrace Bay when Bill Souk of Terrace Bay retired. Welcoming him back are president Bob Abbott, right and secretary Stan Pineau, both of Red Rock. Far further information on the meeting and comments by Bearcat coach Lee Fogolin, see page 8. SMALL STORE OWNERS APPEAL TO COUNCIL A delegation of small store owners appeared before Nipigon Council last Tuesday to object to the proposed new store-closing hours as laid down in a petition being circulated through the township. Their presence was unnecessary, however. Requiring the names of 75 per cent, of the merchants before gaining approval of council, the petition fell short of the required number of names. Linder the proposed change, the small store owners would be grouped with the large chain stores in regard to closing hours. They would be required to close at 6 p.m. every week night except Friday and remain closed from 6 p.m. Saturday until 5 a.m. Tuesday. Council referred the petition back to town clerk Frank Wheeler for investigation. It was the feeling of council that the small stories should be classified as a separate group, if possible. Clerk Wheeler will make a report on his findings at- the next meeting of council October 25. Delegates from the newly- named Nipigon Chamber of Commerce attended the meeting to request permission to erect a sign near the pump house on highway 17-11, to help publicize the town. The request was tabled until Clerk Wheeler has time to investigate all aspects. Subject to the confirmation of the league, council approved use of the council chamber on November 16 for an executive meeting of the Thunder Bay District Municipal League. Car Is Wrecked No Serious Injury Nipigon postmaster Johnny Dam-pier and family escaped serious injury last week when their car was in collision with a truck near Bay City, Mich. The car was a total wreck but, almost miraculously, the family of live escaped with just minor injuries. Mrs. Dampier suffered chest injuries while Johnny suffered a fractured nose. CJLX RECEIVES GO-AHEAD SIGN TO BROADCAST N.S.H.L. GAMES Radio Station CJLX will broadcast the second and third periods of one North Shore Hockey league game per week this coming season. Permission for exclusive broadcasts was given CJLX by the league governors and team representatives Sunday at the semiannual meeting in Terrace Bay. The voice behind the mike for j the broadcasts will be no stranger to intermediate hockey in the area j of Thunder Bay. CJLX sports director Jack Thompson was formerly sports director in Kenora and has j broadcast more than one Thunder Bay final involving North Shore teams. The broadcasts will start in the week of Dec. 10 - 17. HOME FOR AGED DUES PROBLEM FOR SCHREIBER Schreiber wishes to become "established" in one of the Lake-head's homes for the aged, but it may be a costly venture. The township has contacted Dawson Court in Port Arthur but, as Schreiber was not included in the towns paying fees since the home was set up, it is possible that the town will have to make up all back fees before citizens of Schreiber will be accepted. Such homes are supported entirely by the member towns and grants. Schreiber is not connected with any of the establishments at the moment. Schreiber Council received a letter from Dawson Court at their monthly meeting last week, replying that further consideration will be given to the Schreiber proposal at their next meeting. In other business Clerk Russell Skinner informed council of the present financial standing of the township in regard to unpaid taxes. Council was most disturbed by the large figure and ordered a drive to clear this up as soon as possible. In other business Bill Furlonger was appointed assessor for the balance of the year in place of A. W. Hadly, who has retired. Clerk Skinner notified council of the list of appeals and council set the date for Court of Revision as Monday, November 7, at 2 p.m., in the Town Hall auditorium. Councillor Joe McGrath informed council that curtains for the stage in the auditorium have been ordered. A letter was received from the C. P. R. regarding the leasing of lands: i.e., ball field, ravine, roadway south of subway. Reeve D'Arcy will take up the matter with the superintendent. Clerk Skinner instructed to order Memorial Day wreath after a letter was read from the Canadian Legion. Councillors present were Reeve William D'Arcy, councillors George Gordon, Fred Harness, Joseph McGrath, clerk-treasurer Russell Skinner. WORK BEE AT ARENA A nailing bee will be held at Nipigon Arena, Sunday, at 1 p.m. (weather permitting), to reset the nails on the roof and siding. Bring your hammer and give a hand!
