NORSHORE SENTINEL â€" THURSDAY, AUGUST 25, 1960 7 NIPIGON CLERGY ATTEND CONFERENCE ON SCHOOLS Nearly 100 persons attended a recent interdenominational conference concerned with religious teaching in the public schools. The conference, for both clergy and lay persons was held at Albert College, Belleville, Ont. Representatives from the North Shore were the Rev. Alex Gavrel and the Rev. Alfred Reimers, ministers of the Nipigon United and Anglican churches respectively. The purpose of the conference was to provide help for schoolteachers and clergy who are called on to give religious instruction in the public schools, whether at the grade school or high school level. Most of the teachers attended workshop classes appropriate to the grades they are teaching, and learned how to make the best use of the textbooks in religious education which are approved by the Ontario Department of Education. Most of the 18 clergy attended a workshop course on teaching methods, which included two demonstration classes, analysis of teaching methods and practice in course planning and test preparation. Both clergy and teachers worshipped together daily, with Anglican, Baptist, Presbyterian and United ministers taking turns leading the services. After morning worship there was a lecture on the Bible. Optional classes included lectures on Ontario laws concerning religious education and demonstrations of the use of drama, and films. There was a lively exchange of ideas and information not only in the classes but also during meals and other periods of informal activity. One of the most interesting discussions took place one evening between 10:30 and midnight and centred around Church unity, sparked by the strong views of a Dutch Reformed minister. All delegates agreed that the conference was worthwhile and many expressed a desire to attend again next year. The conference was co-sponsored by the Inter-Church Committee on Religious Education in the Schools and the appropriate branch of the Ontario Education association.
