NORSHORE SENTINEL â€" THURSDAY, AUGUST 25, 1960 5 THE NORTH SHORE IS ON THE MOVE By ALEXANDER PHILLIPS General Manager Northwestern Ontario Development Association Its southern boundary is the north shore of Lake Superior, the top step of the new stairway to the sea. Its northern border is the Albany River emptying into the tidewaters of James Bay. In between, the 25,000-square-mile region of East Thunder Bay District is one of Canada's richest in natural resources and strongest in development potential. Indeed, in little more than a decade the north shore and the interior area have become a significant segment of the economy of Northwestern Ontario, annually producing tens of millions of dollars in new wealth from the forest and mineral resources of the region. From Nipigon to Nakina and Dorion to Marathon, this important area has blossomed forth with a dozen fine communities. Their collective population exceeds 20,000. They have a total taxable assessment approximating $32 million. They are served by more than 400 miles of streets and municipal roads. Though the raw frontier lies at their doors, they possess the facilities and amenities of modern living while several are model communities of advanced planning. MAJOR INDUSTRY The economy of the region of East Thunder Bay District is supported and sustained by three major pulp and paper plants, two gold mines, two copper-zinc producers, hydro power and natural gas developments, diversified woods operations and other enterprises. In the making are iron ore mines and in prospect are other natural resource developments. Partners in the progress of the region are companies that loom large in the industrial nomenclature of Canada and the United States â€" Marathon Corporation, Anaconda, Kimberly-Clark, Geco, St. Lawrence Corporation, McLeod-Cockshutt, Leitch and Willroy. Add the names of Trans-Canada Pipe Lines Limited, Northern Ontario Natural Gas Company Limited, Northern Plywoods and CanFer Mines and one is impressed Two Men You Know . . . and Know You Can Rely On! Your doctor and your pharmacist . . . two trusted friends who have given you personal, dependable and faithful care throughout the years . . . who will continue to do so as long as you insist upon their services. The vital importance of your own well-being and that of your family is their first consideration. THOMPSON'S DRUGS LTD. with the expanding character of the area's trends. Manitouwadge's Geco already is one of the nation's rgeat copper mines; Anaconda promises to bei another giant iron ore project. The handsome communities of Red Rock, Terrace Bay and Marathon are founded on the forest wealth of the tributary territory. The Geraldton division of the Lands and Forests Department of Ontario is now the largest wood-producing section in the province with 800,000 cords scheduled for harvesting in 1960-61. Soon the north shore will be traversed by the Lake Superior link of the Trans-Canada Highway, directly connecting the area with the populous East. It will lop hundreds of miles from the highway transport network. Roads are lifelines of development and progress. The new Trans-Canada link should attract new business,1 and growth to the north shoreâ€" and tremendously stimulate the tourist industry. To the south are myriad millions, Canadians and Americans, who never have viewed the exciting vistas and panoramas of the north shore country. The Lake Superior International Highway Association that includes north shore communities in its membership already is energetically promoting the attractions of the region. Similar activity on the local level is under way. At this significant stage in its growth, it must be extremely gratifying to the North Shore that it acquired today a new assetâ€"a weekly publication exclusively devoted to its activities and aspirations. The Norshore Sentinel will be a potent instrument in development to come. ANY TIME - ANY WHERE You'll like Do your thirst a kingsize favor Taste that natural orange flavor!
