10 NORSHORE SENTINEL Thursday, April 13, 1961 A Chat with Chuck By Chuck McOuat CAN ANYONE OUTSKATE SUPS It is said that the home team in a series automatically has a 20 percent advantage on the travelling team. Working on these figures, Lacombe Rockets will still have to be just a sh^de under the 'wonderful' mark if they expect to stop this steamroller called Desire and it roils from Terrace Bay to conquer the West. It took the Superiors nine frustrating years to win their first NSHL title and the way the team is playing right now suggested they're determined to make the most of their one big chance. The story of their determination has been written clearly in the two big games of their series against Kenora and then against Dauphin. When the chips were down, the Sups slapped Kenora 5-1 for the series clincher and then out-battled Dauphin by a similar score in the big game of the second series. So far it has simply been a case of skating power and conditioning. .No team has been able to match the Terrace club in skating and stamina. Fortunately they haven't run into a hard-hitting club but that can be looked at two ways. It's tough to hit them hard when you can't keep up to them. SUPERIORS COULD WIN TRIP The Lacombe series will be the real test. The Superiors have been noted for their great home record but their road record is another matter. With the added problems of a some what in experienced club as far as travelling goes, the Sups might have their hands just as full of problems off the ice as on the ice. But this remains to be seen. Aside from these unpredictable possibilities, the club has no major weaknesses. We feel quite safe in predicting they will win the western title in the full limit of games. In fact, because of their terrific conditioning and skating ability it would be difficult to bet against the Superiors in a series against one of the senior clubs across the West that have been left in the trail of Winnipeg Maroons. It would be an interesting contest, especially so if played on Terrace Bay ice. Should Terrace win the West and gain nationally-wide publicity, it is not out of the question to think that the team might just be awarded one of the fine trips that are now available to hockey teams every year. Next year a senior team is scheduled to go to Japan but, if Winnipeg Maroons should win the Allan Cup as they will do, the CAHA might well consider the intermediate champ. The fact that the team is sponsored by a company would also lend weight to their chances. It would be tremendous publicity for the company as well as the team and, if the proper people got behind the push, it could just become a reality. But we are getting ahead of ourselves. Our intercontinental missies' are still out West trying to destroy the Rockets. First things first but it doesn't do any harm to think and plan out loud. PAPERKINGS MEET SUNDAY The Superiors prolonged success in the hockey wars will no doubt have an effect on the fortunes of the Terrace Bay Comets this spring in Lakehead Senior Baseball league play. Red Rock Paperkings have scheduled their first meeting of the year for this Sunday and will no doubt have a two or three week jump on the Comets by the time their skates are packed away for another year. Things look most promising in the Paperking camp with the addition of two young Lakeheaders and the promise of four Toronto players once Art Bonsall returns from University studies. The big addition is third baseman Art Chuipka, late of Dinty's Colonels. Art was probably the best fielding third sacker in the league last year and will bolster the Kings where they need it most. He's also an excellent dong-ball hitter with good base speed. The second player, Doug Kuokko, like Chiupka, will also be around for the hockey wars next fall. If memories serves right, Doug played juvenile ball last year. With the two Lakeheaders, Bonsall and his pack from Toronto, and Larry LeSarge back with the experience of pro camp coach Vic Seagris should have the depth he has lacked these past few years. Why even the old man himself, Paul Diz Baxter has promised to be first out on the field! Of course he'll probably have to stay out there all year too because wife Elsie won't allow him in the house for breaking his 5,793rd promise to retire. But he has made up his mind, haven't you Paul! RED ROCK FIELD WILL BE READY The long-awaited Red Rock baseball field will definitely be ready for this year's schedule. The field will be rolled and reseeded as soon as the grass comes up and the backstop will be constructed as soon as possible. The Red Rock fans can thus look forward to seeing their team at home for the first time in two years. Meanwhile Terrace Bay's just-as-long-awaited field will have to be delayed another year in all probability. The field was still just a level stretch of sand with patches of grass last fall and will need a good summer of work before it is ready. Look for two things this year. The first, of course, is a more sensible schedule that has the Terrace Bay and Red Rock clubs meeting fewer times and the Lakehead clubs making more trips. The second thing: a new name for the league. Why they have continued to call the leagues the 'Lakehead' Senior Baseball league for these past three years is beyond this agent. It's insulting to the teams of this north shore and should be changed. The earlier a case of tuberculosis is discovered and treated the better the chance of recovery, but thirty-five to forty percent of new cases are far advanced when first reported. The danger of the spread of tuberculosis by tubercle bacilli resistant to the three major drugs used in treating the disease is not only a clinical problem but also a public health threat. TERRACE BAY 'EXPRESS’ STILL ON TRACK WEST Dave Whalen's Terrace Bay Superiors have not only eliminated all comers in their drive towards a berth in the Western Canada Intermediate finals; but have remained in very healthy condition while doing so. This, in itself bears testimony to the terrific condition the team is in and has been in all year. The dominant feature which has endeared them to their fans has been their fast wheeling wide-open style of play. Their powerful skating ability is quite apparent in their checking as well, and any club that hopes to out skate them. A no mean task. Winky planned no lineup changes for their opening game Tuesday against Lacombe Rockets staying with the club that eliminated the Dauphin Kings in four games. Here is a summary of the club as they will appear in Lacombe. ARNOLD JORGENSON - The sensational pick-up from Red, Rock was. this year's winner of North Shores' most valuable, and best goal against averages awards. Jorgy will most likely start in goal for the Sups and remain for the whole series. He is a terrific performer and is at his best under pressure. If he has any weakness it's not apparent. DON DOBSON - Regular net-minder for Terrace Bay during the season. Although he is noT as spectacular as Jorgenson, he is a steady custodian. His best asset is his wonderful, glove hand. (Don might see some action against Lacombe as he did against both Kenora and Dauphin, TOM POLLARD (RD)-Best defenseman in NSHL and a standout in all play-off games to date. This former P.A. North Star graduate, c&mbines rugged defensive work along with fine passing, shooting and rushing ability. He has the ability to play in a much higher calibre of hockey, perhaps even pro. CY BRASSARD (LD) - Captain of the Superiors and policeman for the club on the ice Cy has eliminated most of the chippy aspects of his early career while not taking anything away from his rugged style of play. Most improved Superior this year. BILL MATHEWS (LD) - One of the Fort Frances pick-ups and no stranger to local fans who remembered him when he played for P.A. Bruins. A strong shooter and a bashing hitter. Bull, as he as commonly known, has a lot ol hockey savy. Whalen made no mistake when he chose this guy. DAVE DESROSIER (RD) - A veteran of long service for the Bays, and a real good man to round out the corps of defensemen. Dave likes to mix it, and is a good point man as well as a rushing defenseman. Whalen can be thankful Desrosier didn't retire as planned this year. . FORWARDS MARVIN OSMAR (Centre) - A galloping cowboy who is as erratic as he is good. His unique skating and stickhandling ability makes him stand out like a sore thumb. One of the main reasons Terrace is as far as they are. MAURICE OSMAR (LW) - Marvin's brother and perennial line-mate. Maurice is the garbage collector, and has an uncanny ability of scoring, even from impossible angles. His fast breaking style compliments his brother's fine passing. AL LANGTEIGNE (RW) - Al was first pick-up named by Terrace when they won league championship and trails from Marathon. This hard skating smoothie goes with the Osmar brothers like fingers in a glove, giving good balance to the first unit, RON SHOCK (Centre) - Rookie of the year in NSHA and the best newcomer in years from around these parts. Just 17 years old, Ron played his position like a ten year veteran. A sure-fire pro prospect. BOB ADAMO (LW) - A prolific runner who can notch the goals from the port side. Bobby is a hot and cold player who can break up the game at any given moment. JOE TOOKENAY (RW) - The last of Morchans. "Tooker" Joe is a strong skater, hard hitter, but the worst goal scorer in all of Canada. IKE IZENSOPH (Centre) - Another pick up from Fort Frances and another jewel. He has no weakness on any points and could very well be best Intermediate player in Canada. This is one reason why Terrace may very well end up winning everything, DAVE "WINKY" WHALEN (RW) - Playing-coach and brains of the Terrace team. "Winky" has but one desire and that is to win at all cost. A real scoring threat, Whalen even relegated himself to the role of a checker for the sake of the team. The best man the Superiors can ice. RAY STACHIW (LW) - This little left winger just goes and and goes and goes. He kills penalties along with Calder and it's the best combination I've ever seen. RICKY POLHILL (RW) - Like Stachiw, this fellow never stops digging. In his first year with the Sups., he helped make up the best checking line the league has ever seen. On the reserve list at the moment, Polhill is a valuable substitute, when needed. GORDIE CALDER (Centre) -Calder is regular centre during league, but since Izensoph arrived has been used to kill penalties. He is the second member of the penalty-killing brigade, and a little fellow with a lot of heart. When he is chasing an opponent you would think that he had a wire attached to him, he follows him so close. BILLY PYTYCH (LD) - Billy the kid is the clubs third goalie, having played a number of games during the season when Dobson was injured. Pretty fair defense-man in his own right, with a good shot and an educated hip. . AMBY LEBLANC (RD) - Amby hails from NOHA and was a sparkling newcomer with the Bays this year. A rugged hitting defenseman he is really heady and doesn't throw the puck away needlessly. LeBlanc has just recovered from injuries and will probably see service in the Lacombe series. With this lineup Whalen has achieved what he set out for â€" a fast skating, hard checking balanced club. It is useless to predict them to win, not knowing how good the Lacombe Rockets are but one thing it's going to take a great club to beat them. REBELS WIN B-BALL TITLE Red Rock Rebels used one-goal margins in the final two games to edge out Nipigon Canadians for the Nipigon-Red Rock Broomball title recently. The Rebels tied the first game of the best-of-five final 2-2 and then lost the next 6-2. They hung on with a 1-1 tie in the' third game but then produced in the clutch with 3-2 and 1-0 victories in the final two games to win the title. The Rebels edged Oldtimers 3-1 and 2-0 in the best-of-three semi-final while Canadians were tying with Monarchs 2-2 and then finally winning on 4-2 and 3-1 victories. Here are the final league standings: W L T F A PTS REBELS 11 1 4 36 10 26 CANADIANS 12 3 1 33 13 25 OLDTIMERS 4 9 3 11 28 11 MONARCHS 2 9 5 15 27 9 HUSKIES 2 9 5 7 24 9 If you plan on. ...
