Wednesday, March 29, 1961 NORSHORE SENTINEL 7 SPORTS BIZ WITH DIZ BY PAUL "DIZZY" BAXTER Now that the current season in the NSHL is past history, this reporter will endeavour to give credit where credit is due. In the past it has been easy to criticize officials and various personnel in this league but when the picture as a whole is reviewed we must in all sincerity weigh the other side of the scale. First, a vote of thanks to Stu Harrison and Roland Gauthier for a splendid job with the referees and other officials during the year. Not only is Gauthier one of our top officials but his handling of the referees' schedule was as fair as one man could possibly make it. since it would be impossible to list every official individually and credit them it will suffice if I reiterate with, to every official, a job well done. To rookie coach Roger Harvey and his fighting Royals we can just say you gave us one of the most pleasant surprises this year, when the league started, the team from Red Rock was not expected to be much of a threat, but it soon became apparent that this pessimism didn't deter a strong fighting spirit. Coach Harvey had them digging from the opening game right to the ’ bitter end and made them the best drawing card in the league. Where ability was lacking he instilled desire and through patience alone, he brought his young players along splendidly. If Roger returns at the reins next year and bolsters his club to fill a few holes. I can't help but feel that the Royals will be the team to watch in the future. One thing that is for sure, if they maintain their hurtling tactics they'll be hard to beat any year. This season saw Terrace replace Marathon as champions and ended long years of frustration for the Bays. Not only are the Superiors worthy of the title, but they are as fine a representative as we have ever sent out of this area. As in the case of Montreal, it would be easy to say the Sups had the horses and no wonder they won. Granted, Terrace Bay were strong in all departments, but it took Dave Whalen to weld them together and keep peace and harmony throughout while not letting complacency creep in. I have in my columns throughout the winter been riding Whalen with tongue in cheek but with both barrels blasting but, having known Dave since boyhood, and seeing that he makes good copy, I'm sure that he feels there is no malice. On the contrary I feel that "winky" has got more ability and color than most players in the league, not discounting his coaching ability as his record proves. Marvin Osmar has been "given the gears" from this reporter in the same way through the year. Let me say this, it's not when you're being talked about that you should worry but rather when you're not mentioned that perhaps you have slipped. DON’T FORGET ’MEN BEHIND THE SCENES’ 'The success of Terrace also hinges on the. men behind the scenes. Jack Thomas, Joe Adamo and Benny Hayes comprise a few of the more prominent figures that worked quietly and efficiently towards the prize. Players don't just happen to be in a place to play hockey. They are contacted, then offered a job and a home in return for their services and the men on the executive of a hockey team have their hands full when player recruiting. That is why a lot of the credit for filling the holes on the Bay’s last year team must go to this year's executive. To the individual award winners a hearty congratulations on fine showings throughout the year Herman Manilla was full credit for his scoring championship, as was Tom Pollard for being chosen the best rear guard. The rookie of the year award to Ron Shock was by far the most obvious choice. If Ron continues to improve in OHA competition as rapidly as he has done in our league it won't be long before we will see him make the big jump to the pro ranks. In any case, he has the best wishes of all the people in the North Shore area. When you try and group words to describe Arnold Jorgenson, the winner of the best goal averages and most 'valuable player, it's time to quote poetry. ‘^Bulwark of our breed, the one sure hope against the border"...These words really don't elaborate on the many skills of Jorgy who is Red Rock's million dollar baby. His coolness and agility and his explosive temperament all go into the makeup of one of the league’s true super-stars. Another surprise award was the one given to the Nipigon Flyers. Indeed it shocked and disappointed many a Flyertown fan to see their team the recipient of the least penalized team award, the Peter Mazza trophy. The players wished that misconducts would have been counted and this would have put them leading the penalty award instead of being a collection of Lady Byingers. I have purposely neglected Marathon until last. Towards the end the Mercs tried to turn back the clock and come from behind as they have done so many times in the past. They were foiled not through lack of effort but because of an acute player shortage. One earmark- of the past Mercury team was depth. This was sadly lacking this year and proved to be their downfall. Let's hope the team can settle their financial difficulties "and strengthen their team into the old Mercs next year. TERRACE IN .TROUBLE TWO DOWN IN SERIES Terrace Bay Superiors literally slipped and slid into their own bailiwick early Tuesday morning and braced themselves for an all-out fight against Kenora Thistles. The Bays lost the first two games of the best-of-five Thunder Bay Intermediate Hockey final at Kenora Saturday night and Sunday and returned home in the unevitable position of having to win three straight to take the Charlie Boyle trophy. Games were scheduled for Tuesday night and, if necessary, Wednesday and Thursday. Tuesday's score was not available at press time. The Bays ‘slipped and slid' on a highway made treacherous by freezing rain Monday night as they drove by car back to Terrace at 20 and 30 mph. They arrived just after midnight and many of the players had to be at work Tuesday morning.. Coach Whalen was disappointed the Bays didn't come home with a split after losing 3-2 Saturday and 5-2 Sunday. "We played well enough to win Saturday but just didn't get the breaks. We actually outplayed them but that's hockey, said Winky. Dave rated the Kenora team ‘a real good checking club that plays good positional hockey.' He had special praise for Stubby Dubchuk, the Thistles highly-rated forward. "That guy should be playing pro," claims Dave, "He has a shot so hard he actually broke our defenceman's shin pads. I've never seen a puck go so fast!" Dave wasn't pleased with the performance of his club in Kenora, He didn't feel they played as well as they did in the league but put it down to inexperience in playoffs. He didn't feel the club was hustling like.; it should have been. He still felt confident the Bays would not be beaten at home however. The Osmar-Osmar-Whalen line- produced as expected in Kenora with Maurice scoring two goals, both from Marvin, Saturday and Whalen passing to Dave Desrosier for the third goal. Sunday Marvin Osmar opened the scoring and Al Lan-t-eigne had the other goal. Superiors led 2-0 after one period Saturday and were still ahead 3-2 after two laps. Frank. Leroux finally scored the win- ner for Kenora as he pulled Dobson on a neat play. Sunday it was no contest after the first period. Osmar put the Bays ahead 1-0 but three unanswered goals in the second period and then two more goals midway through the final period made it 5-1 before Lanteigne got his goal.
