Photos by Glena Clearwater Nipigon Elementary Athletes Win Track And Field Meet By GLENA CLEARWTER RED ROCK â€" The annual track and field meeting of the Nipigon Red Rock elementary schools system was held at Red Rock Wednesday with schools from Red Rock, Nipigon and Dorion participating. The entire meet was staged on the recreation field of St. Hilary's School in Red Rock with events being held in junior, intermediate and senior categories, for the boys and girls. Nipigon Public School proved to have the star athletes of the year as it scored an overwhelming victory in points, to capture the East Thunder Bay District Trophy. The Nipigon schools came up with eight of the 16 trophies offered in the competitions, giving their opponents some exciting competition, to come up with the overall trophy, three divisional trophies and four individual awards. In the senior girls' competitions Renelda Rogers, of Nipigon won the individual trophy for highest points. Ardent Fawcett, also of Nipigon, was the top male athlete capturing the senior boys division, while yet another Nipigon student Stephen Vaughan won out for top honors in the boys' intermediate competitions. Bruce Koski in the junior boys' events, came up with top points for another individual victory for Nipigon Public School. Karen McLeod, of St. Edwards School in Nipigon was the junior girls' champion. Doreen Haukkanen, a Dorion student attending school at Red Rock captured the intermediate girls' crown. Students competed in the 100, 400 and 1500 metre races, as well as relay competitions, high jumping, running long jump, standing long jump, triple (hop, step and jump) jumping and shot putt events. The weatherman cooperated with an excellent warm and sunny day. ANOTHER HAPPY WINNER . . . Karen McLeod, of St. Edwards School, who captured five firsts in meet, receives trophy from track coach Loui Rocco.
