NORSHORE SENTINEL Keeping Eatch on the Great North Shore VOLUME 1, NO 21 NORSHORE SENTINEL NIPIGON, ONTARIO, THURSDAY, JAN. 12, 1961 NOT OVER 10c NINE CANDIDATES SET ELECTION IS JAN. 23rd FOR COUNCIL Nipigon voters will have a full slate of nine candidates from which to choose when they go to the polls Jan 23 to elect a new reeve and one new alderman. Three nominees, O.A. Hannula, Gerry Routhier and Gordon Waghorn qualified to ran for the position of reeve while six candidates qualified to run for alderman. They are A. Ashworth, M. Atkinson, E.C. Everett, L. Larsen, R. Taisey and E. Wright. An overflow crowd of more than 70 persons, a recent-years record attendance nominated a total of 18 persons Monday night at the Nomination meeting. Nominated for reeve were R.F. Williams, Hannula,Waghorn Routhier, A. Durocher, W. Moore and E. Wright. Durocher declined the nomination at the meeting while Wright stepped down to run for council. Nominated for council were Everett, Taisey, M. Borsk, Ashworth, Wright, B. Ward, L. Larsen, Dr. C. Wells and P. Bonneau. Dr. Wells declined at the meeting while the others did not qualify. The meeting was Nipigon’s second attempt to find suitable candidates for the two open seats. A previous nomination meeting in December ended in failure when only 23 persons showed up at the meeting and candidates qualified for two of the then three vacancies. Mrs. Betty Jeffery was elected by acclamation, joining Dr. E.R. Sommerleigh and Guy Rush ton, both presently serving two year terms. Nominees had until 9 pm Tuesday to qualify. Last person to qualify was E. Wright who announced his intentions at 8 p.m. First person to qualify was Gerry Routhier for the position of reeve. YOUR CANDIDATES FOR REEVE O.A. WRIGHT, Garage Owner Town Hall Meet Set For Monday Nipigon voters will have a chance to hear the three candidates for reeve and six candidates for council next Monday evening at a special town hall meeting called by the Chamber of Commerce. The meeting will be held in the public school auditorium starting at 8 p.m. All citizens are urged to attend. NIPIGON CHAMBER ELECTS D. COCHRANE PRESIDENT The Nipigon Chamber of Commerce was given a 'youth injection Tuesday night when Donald Cochrane was elected president by acclamation. Owner of the new funeral home and ambulance service, Don has been a resident of the township for just two months. He replaces Harley Couthardr. Bruce Ward was named vice president in keeping with the youth movement. Both executives are under 30. Tuesday's meeting heard the industrial committee report a serious lack of available property within the township for possible industrial or commercial development. The committee will meet with the new council as soon as possible to see if new properties can be made available. A suggestion that a provincial trailer park and tenting grounds be built close to Nipigon met with firm approval of the 28 members present. A committee was appointed to contact the Dept, of Lands and Forest in regard to a site, near Kama Point. Members of the committee are Maurice Thompson, Florien Zechner, Art Durocher and Marshall Borsk. At the suggestion of secretary Frank Zayette , it was decided that a town hall meeting would be held Monday evening when the candidates for town office can present their platforms. The meeting will start at 8 p.m. SUPERIORS STOP RED ROCK AGAIN Terrace Bay Superiors pulled into a first place tie with Red Rock Royals Tuesday night in North Shore Hockey league action as they edged the Royals 4â€"3 at Red Rock. The Superiors are slated to play Marathon Mercuries Thursday night and then again in a two-game weekend series. The Royals meet Nipigon Flyers Sunday afternoon in Red Rock and there is also a possibility that the same two teams might play Saturday night in Nipigon in a rescheduled game from Boxing Day. NORSHORE NOTES Allan Holiday was elected to the vacant seat on the Mutual Benefit Committee of Cameron Falls last week. He topped five other candidates including two women in an exciting and popular election. Other candidates were Eleanor Leece, Mary McKinnon, Lome Corlette, Chuck Hub-son and George Grant. Nipigon didn’t have the first baby of the New Year in the district but they went one better...they had the first twins! Marilyn Little, wife of OPP constable Bob Little, gave birth to twin boys Saturday In Nipigon Memorial hospital. Mother and sons are doing fine. Work has been completed, for the moment, on the highway between Nipigon and the Lakehead. But Eastward the work continued right through the winter on sections of the highway between Nipigon and Schrieber. Nipigon council held its inaugural Monday morning with only one of the three vacant seats filled. Mrs. Betty Jeffrey, elected by acclamation in December was sworn into office. The new reeve and councillor to be decided by the voters on Jan. 23, will be sworn in separately. FOR REEVE
