The good Father Specht, a nervous little man who served the missions of Lake Nipigon and Long Lac for eighteen years, had quite an unsettling experience the first time he voyaged to Fort Nipigon in September 1880. He came to the conclusion that if the island of Bonaventure in the Gaspe was a bird sanctuary then Nipigon was a paradise for dogs. It must have been the two dozen carnivorous beasts that came howling after him when he visited the school built on an island three quarters of a mile from the fort that gave him that idea. By the time his successor, Napoleon Dugas, took over in 1898 no selfrespecting .person had less than 23 or 24 dogs. This same Father Dugas came up the Nipigon River with a Monseigneur O'Conner and Father Specht and all sorts of insects. In no time at all the Mgr O'Con ner was covered with enough blood to have been stabbed. Father Dugas had thicker skin, he just got bumps. If the day was bad the night was worse. They had just turned in when a cloud burst turned them out. The dark hours were spent standing in the wet until day-light when they crawled upon a rock and slept under the sun. D. P. Thunder Bay Riding Association to host its annual meeting. This year the meeting will be extended into a two day convention, at which time the N. D. P. Federal candidate for the riding will be nominated. It is expected that David Lewis, recently elected Federal New Democratic leader, will honour the convention with his presence, and will address the gathering on the first day of the convention, Saturday April 8th. The club plans to hold its next monthly meeting in Red Rock. At this meeting a new slate of officers for the current year will be elected. All members and supporters are urged to attend.
