Description
This portrait is of Penelope Chase Prendergast, a woman of a prominant family in the St.Catharines and Thorold area. Her husband was Dr. Jediah Prendergast, the first non-military doctor in the St. Catharines and Thorold area. She was also the mother-in-law of William Hamilton Merritt.

The unframed, oil painting is 29 inches in height, 24 inches in length, and 1 inch wide. The portrait is of a middle aged woman, Penelope Chase Prendergast, with a white bonnet that ties under her chin. She is also wearing a black dress with a white shawl over her shoulders. There is a small floral pattern on the front left of her bonnet and fancy stitching on the edges around her face. She has very dark eyes and is painted on a dark brown background.
