This is one of seven oil on canvas paintings by Birch that depicts the Battle of Lake Erie (September 1813).

This particular canvas shows the end of the battle. The Detroit is ready to surrender, Perry's ship is standing by with their flag still flying, and there is a burning vessel in the distance.
