- The recollections of the Honourable James Crooks, a well known merchant in Niagara, and a Captain in the 1st Lincoln Militia during the War of 1812. It begins by discussing the Orders in Council passed by Britain, which prohibited communication between Britain and its dependencies with countries under Napoleonic rule; a main cause of the war. It also discusses his various experiences during the war including some with Sir Isaac Brock, the Battle of Queenston Heights, and Brock's funeral. There is also a piece discussing the seizure of boats on Lake Ontario by American fleets. In particular, Crooks was concerned about his merchant vessel, the Lord Nelson (which was commandered and renamed The Scourge, which sunk in Lake Ontario during the War) being commandeered by the US Navy 13 days prior to the declaration of war. He claimed this as well as his property lost during the American occupation of Niagara in his war losses claim. Unfortunately, Crooks never fully recovered from the losses he sustained during the war.
