Description
This publication consists of extracts of eighty-eight letters from Mrs. Ann Powell, wife of Chief Justice Powell of Upper Canada, to her brother George W. Murray Esq., a merchant in New York. The letters, mostly from York, have been transcribed by Mrs. Curzon and are dated from 1807 to 1821. The letters provide information on Niagara prior to the War of 1812 as well as the reconstruction that followed it. There is also a bit of information on Miss Mary Powell who was once engaged to Col. McDonnell, Attorney General of Upper Canada and Aid-de-Camp to Sir Isaac Brock.

In addition, there is a paper on Col. William Duff Miller, an early inhabitant of Niagara and a soldier in the Lincoln Militia in 1812.

This is one of forty-four Niagara Historical Society publications, created between the years 1896 and 1939. The collection, written by a variety of local historians for the benefit of the community, with an array of subject matter, reveals Niagara-on-the-Lake’s unique history.
