Fort George Fort George was the headquarters of the British army in the Great Lakes region. Isaac Brock, commander in chief in Upper Canada, organized the defence of the province from this post, although he did not live in the fort. Brock's quarters were the Government house near the corner of King and Queen Streets in the town. Fort George was a large "field work" that served as a depot and rallying point for the local militia. While its batteries of cannons were in place to protect the fort and guard the Niagara River, the fort was not really very formidable as a defensive position. It was destroyed by American artillery fire on May 25, 1813.
