John Smith was born in Yorkshire, England in 1841 and came to Whitby in 1862. He farmed for James Dryden at Maple Shade Farm, Brooklin and for many years was on the Dow farm. About 1888 he purchased Bayside Farm (located on the west side of Whitby Harbour where Whitby Mental Health Services is located today). On March 6, 1866 in Whitby Township, he and Sarah Crawforth were married. He was a member of the Whitby Town Council from 1894-1897; 1900-1902; and 1908-1911. He had one of the finest farms in Canada and the Grove House at the Psychiatric Hospital was his old farm house. He died on January 18, 1912 and was buried in Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
He bought Bayside Farm from the Gordon Family.
