George W. Dryden, Registrar
George William Dryden was born on Maple Shade Farm, lot 19, concession 7, Whitby Township on February 3, 1844. After entering business in port perry he was appointed Ontario County Registrar of Deeds in 1897. He served in this position until his death at Whitby on April 9, 1931 and is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
J.E. Farewell, K.C. Clerk
Colonel John Edwin Farewell was born in East Whitby Township on February 18, 1840, a descendent of Irish ancestors and was adopted by Abraham Farewell, MP for Ontario South. He was educated in Whitby and Barrie and received a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Toronto in 1864. From 1864 to 1872 he practised law in Oshawa, Whitby and Bowmanville. In 1872 he became Ontario County Crown Attorney; in 1877 Clerk of the Peace; and in 1882 County Clerk. He saw service in the Fenian Raids and was commanding officer of the 34th Regiment from 1898 to 1902. For about 30 years starting in 1874 he was a member and chairman of the Whitby Public School Board. Col. Farewell published a history of Ontario County in 1907. He died at Oshawa on December 29, 1923 and is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
John F. Paxton, Sheriff
John Franklin Paxton was born at Port Perry on October 14, 1857. When his father, Thomas Paxton was appointed Sheriff of Ontario County in 1881 the family moved to Whitby. John Franklin Paxton was appointed Sheriff to succeed his father on the latter's death in 1887 and held the office until he retired in 1932. A keen sportsman he was secretary of the Ontario Hockey Association for more than 25 years. Sheriff Paxton died at Montreal, Quebec on May 12, 1936 and is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
Donald McKay, Treasurer
Donald McKay was born in 1837 in Glengarry County, Ontario. He was educated at upper Canada College in Toronto and taught school in Markham Township for several years. Later he was a storekeeper in the northern part of Otnario County. He served as Ontario County Treasurer from 1890 until his death at Whitby on May 13, 1914. Donald McKay is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
L.T. Barclay, Registrar Surrogate Court
Lyman Theophilus Barclay was born in Pickering Township in May 1855. He was educated at Brooklin and Oshawa and studied law with Farewell & McGee in Oshawa. He graduated from Osgoode Hall in 1878 and managed the office of J.V. Ham Jr. in Whitby. He became clerk of the Ontario County Court in 1881. He also served on the Whitby Board of Education and the Board of the Ontario Ladies’ College. He was president of the Whitby public Library Board when the new Carnegie Library was built in 1913-1914. In later life he moved to western Canada and died at Toronto on October 12, 1925. He is buried at union Cemetery, Oshawa.
His Honor Judge McCrimmon
Neil McCrimmon was born at Vankleek Hill, County of Prescott, Ontario on June 23, 1858. He began his career lumbering in the Upper Ottawa river area and spent three years in Wyoming and Utah Territories as a stage coach agent. From 1882 to 1884 he studied law at St. Thomas and Ridgetown, Ontario. In 1887 he was called to the Bar and moved to Toronto after practising as a lawyer in St. Thomas. He became Senior Judge of Ontario County at Whitby in 1900 and died at Whitby on June 12, 1911. He is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
G.Y. Smith, Judge Surrogate Court
George Young Smith was born in Nova Scotia July 26, 1833 and came to Whitby in 1849. He started his career as a teacher in a number of Whitby's public schools. He graduated in law from the university of Toronto in 1864 and was a partner for three years with Samuel Cochrane, Ontario County's Crown Attorney. He was Deputy Reeve of Whitby in 1886, Reeve in 1887, 1888, and 1889, and may from 1876-1877. He was also president of the Ontario Ladies' College for a number of years and became a judge of the Ontario County Courts in 1889. He died at Oshawa on September 2, 1920 and is buried at St. John's Anglican Cemetery, Port Whitby.
His Honor Judge McIntyre
Duncan John McIntyre was born on the Island of Tiree in the south-western part of Argyleshire, Scotland on the Estate of the Duke of Argly on October 22, 1841. The family settled in Mariposa Township in Victoria County, Ontario in 1847. In 1860 Duncan McIntyre became a teacher at the village of Manilla and taught for two years in Mariposa Township. He studied law at Toronto and Lindsay and was called to the Bar in 1871. After a legal career of 27 years in Lindsay, which included a term as police magistrate from 1892-1898, he became Deputy Judge of Ontario County in 1897. He became Junior Judge of Ontario County at Whitby in 1898. From 1883-1886, Mr. McIntyre was a Liberal Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for South Victoria. He died at Whitby on September 8, 1920 and is buried at Riverside Cemetery, Lindsay, Ontario.
