Description:
A black and white large format negative of the Town of Whitby's crest taken on March 8, 1952. The crest has a circle with the words "Corporation of the Town of Whitby" written around the circle. Within the first circle there is a second circle that contains a shield shape. On top of the shield is a beaver. Inside the shield at the top is a train and railroad car, below the train is a sailing scene of a schooner. The crest has a hand-drawn square frame around it. The word "Whitby" is typed at the bottom right of the photograph.
Notes:
On January 20,1855 Whitby officially incorporated as a town bringing together Port Windsor (Port Whitby), Perry’s Corners, and Hamer’s Corners, a small settlement to the east of Perry’s Corners. The crest symbolizes the Corporation of the Town of Whitby.

Marjorie Georgina Ruddy (1908-1980) was a prominent Whitby photographer and the only commercial photographer in Whitby during the 1930s and 1940s. Marjorie was the official photographer for the Whitby Police Department starting in the 1930s and as a result took many photographs of car accidents, fingerprints and crime scenes. (Station Gallery.
