And the spectacle of the heaviest and strongest clans of tractors will be a highlight of the popular truck and tractor pull on Friday night, June 3. Competitors from Ontario, Quebec and northern U.S. states, with tractors that have 3,000 to 5,000 horsepower, will put on a great show, says Rob Carson, chair of the committee that organizes the event. "They're aIl modified, built only for the pupse of puling, ays Carson, service manager at Hub Inter- national, a farmn equipment store in Brooklin. "It m'akes for a very exciting show." Other categories pullers may enter are: four-wheel- drive modified trucks; two-wheel-drive modified trucks; and two classes (light and heavy) of pro-stock tractors. «The pro-stocks have five times the orignal horsepower Of the tractors," says Carson, ntong that Rendal Oil is the sponsor of the class. Also a sponsor this year is Snap-On Tool s. «They're my personal favourite, they put on a great show." Competîtors hook their tractors or trucks to the weight transfer sled that was built and is operated by local resident Don Alves, a mechanic at the Region of Durhamn works yarc.. Alves has the only self-propelled sled in Canada, and he takes it to competitions ai I over Ontario and Quebec. Alves also owns the bleachers on which spectators sit to watch the show, and he also rents out the bleachers at events aIl over Ontario. Once hooked up and given the go ahead, competitors pull the sled as far as they cari. With the we*ILh transfer, "the further you pull, the harder it ie to pull,» says Carson.
