Free PresseStaff I arn a lover of Italian food. Just the srnell of garlie, tomato sauce and pasta cooking aile dente is enough to send me into seventh heaven. Although it has been located at the corner of Athol and Simncoe Sts. in Oshawa for just over three years now, I had lunch at Fazio's for the firat tuie ever last week. In a word, it was won- derful. I lunched on veal scaloppine, the like of wbich I haven't tasted for several years. The meat was broiled to per- fection - it was tender and juicy - and the white wine and mushroorn sauce was right on the mark. The flavor was the fresmly squeezea 'U'ceof haif a lemon which was provided on the side. Fazio's is ýowned and operated by Nick and Tino Fazio who had their firat foray into the local. food scene with Pompei Pizza, one of Oshawa's better 'pizza joints. Their downtown restaurant was jam packed with the lun- chtime croWd last Thur- sday when I visited. The atmosphere was elec- trie with people laugbing and talking while drinking wine and enjoying the fare. It is niy belief that the average Canadian has been unmer- cifully over-taxed by the government. We always hear of the desperate problems of the low-income familles, and yet, littie is accomplished to help the average Qanadain to succeed. I definitely agree that low-ncome families must be given assistance, but it seerns that the Government continually looks to the middle-class for the necessary funds ta provide the many programs which they have in- stituted. 0f course, with the present state of the Canadian economy, everyone is having a hard time "mfaking a go of it", but I feel that the government should be paying more attention to middle-income familles. These are the people who are trying to keep a business afloat, keep food on the table and clothes on their chldren. Naturally we ail have goals to strive for, this traditionally being to own our own home. I arn of the opinion that the government is trying to provide so many safety nets, that it has not paid attention to the average Canadian who wants to own a home. The middle-income-Canadians have been left with nothinig to which would assist them to pur- chase a hexie,ý let alone trying to deal with the present interest rates if they do manage to save enought for a down-payment. We should be en- couraging the average Canadian to strive for their goals, as in the long run it assists our economy. The greater the need for new homes, the more em- ployment is created, and it folloWs that the moreý Canadians who are employed, the less the gover- nment has to spend in unemployment insurance benefits. I feel very strongly that govern.ment should be paying much more attention to the average Canadian and give them the support which they deserve. Mter ail, they pay taxes, and it's time that they get some return for their money.
