itizens in the early Village and ‘ Town of Waterloo kept the tradiâ€" tional European custom of headâ€" ing out to parklands whenever a holiâ€" day allowed. They hadn‘t far to go to find semiâ€" rural, treed properties whose owners happily welcomed picnickers. North of Union Street West â€" near the appropriately named Park Street â€" an open forest, known as Randall‘s Grove after the owner, was a favourite weekend repair, particularly for the employees of Randall‘s Granite Mills distillery. Further to the north, past William Street, old maps show an oval track that was part of the Waterloo Show Grounds. The popular private park provided the venue for competitive athletic meets and Waterloo‘s annual fall fair. In 1867, the village bought that land for free public use. Then in 1909 it was subdivided to build much needed housing and Alexandra school, Waterâ€" loo‘s second public school. On King Street itself two relatively small areas were in constant use by the populace. At its intersection with William Street, the split public square, which still exists, was long the site of a weekly farmers‘ market, known particâ€" ularly for the sale of cattle. And at the centre of town, on the southwest corner of King and Erb streets, a private parcel of land had served as the meeting place since the very beginning of the hamlet. Because of the adjacent Union Flour Mill, the area was known as Mill Square. Two blocks to the east, almost into the open country, a very popular bow!â€" ing green/ice rink was laid out between Erb Street and the rail yards. Almost up to the end of the nineâ€" teenth century, farmland lay alongside Albert Street. The Voelker House at Albert and Fountain streets, designated a Waterloo Heritage property, was built on that land in 1849.
