Claus Koelln came out from Germany to Waterloo in 1855. He was apprenticed as a carpenter and builder and carried on this trade here, building homes and businesses in early Waterloo.
In 1869, he was the main contractor when the Fair Building was constructed on the Show grounds. This is where some of the early Saengerfests were held. He lived to the ripe old age of 98 yrs 8 months.
