- Description:
- This photograph was taken at the St. Marys Quarry in the summer of 1968. The picture features former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau jumping off of the diving board at the quarry. He was visiting the quarry after taking in a show at the Stratford Festival earlier in the day and was accompanied by colleagues and minimal security.
The quarry located in St. Marys, Ontario, is the largest outdoor swimming pool in Canada. It was once a limestone quarry until it was filled in with water in 1930, and purchased by the Town of St. Marys in 1945 to be turned into a public swimming pool. It remains to this day a popular swimming spot during the summer.
