London Collegiate Institute, London, Ontario
Description
- Media Type:
- Image
- Item Type:
- Photographs
- Description:
- A black and white photograph showing the front of the London High School, also known later as the London Collegiate Institute, with its high pitched roof and gothic windows. A large group of people, possibly students, teachers and other citizens can be seen through the metal fence, seated on the lawn or standing. Immediately in front of the school is a large military group, the school's cadet corp.
- Notes:
- The school, built in 1877-1878 was located at the northwest corner of Dufferin and Waterloo Streets. An addition to the building in 1899 dwarfed the original building which became the rear wing. In 1920 the London Collegiate Institute was destroyed by fire. The handwritten inscription appearing on the back of the photograph suggests the time period as 1900, however, since the addition has not yet been added and the landscaping is relatively new, it appears to be prior to 1889. Note also: When Bishop Hellmuth opened his boys school on September 1, 1865 on the north side of St. James between Waterloo and Wellington Streets, it was originally called the London Collegiate Institute for the first two years. In 1867 the name changed to the Hellmuth Boys College.
