Description
A black and white print of Hellmuth Ladies' College, showing the well treed and landscaped grounds as seen from a distance. A tall picket fence runs across the front of the property. Situated to the left of the ornate entrance with separate gates for pedestrians and vehicles, is a gatehouse. Beyond the gate, the driveway leads up the hill to the college. In the foreground of the photograph a rough timber fence edges the west side of Richmond Street.
Notes
Hellmuth Ladies' College was located on Richmond Street North, just south of Windermere Road. Founded by the Rt. Rev. Isaac Hellmuth, it opened Sept.23, 1869. The buildings and grounds were purchased by the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1899 and it was then known as Mount St Joseph. It was used as the order's motherhouse, an orphanage and later added a girl's boarding school. The main building was demolished in 1976.
The inscription on the back of the photograph suggests the site was later known as Mt. Hope. From a search of London city directories and the Sisters of St. Joseph's history called "Mount St. Joseph" this appears to be incorrect. However, it may have been commonly referred to as Mt. Hope after the orphanage moved there on closing its location further south on Richmond at College Street. PG B8
