Description:
Black and white print of the City Hall and Public Utilities Commission Office on the north east corner of Dundas and Wellington Streets. Several pedestrians are on the sidewalk and cars are parked on the street in front of the building. A billboard to the left of the building encourages people to "Buy More War Savings Certificates".
Notes:
When the new city hall was built on this site in 1928, it was constructed to incorporate the Public Utilities Commission building that opened in 1918 on the north east corner of Dundas and Wellington Streets. The exterior design carried out the lines already established by the Public Utilities Commission building. Originally a three storey structure, the PUC building was increased to four stories.
The juncture between the two buildings is disguised by a monumental frontispiece, containing a massive front entranceway on the ground floor, a broad round-headed window that extends through the second and third storeys, and a crest at the level of the balustrade. Copies of the PUC pilasters and balustrade extend across the addition. (Source: "Downtown London: Layers of Time" edited by Michael Baker)

City Hall remained on Dundas Street until a new city hall was officially opened on September 22, 1971 at 300 Dufferin Avenue.

The London Room photograph index card gives the date of this photograph as ca. 1940.
